I'm just wondering, this has not happened

If a kid with cancer wants my dog for a make a wish, do I have to give my dog away? Would people get angry at me for not helping this kid out? Also would I have a case to make if I told them that this is my therapy dog? Like what would people have more sympathy for the mentally ill adult or the sick kid? Would I get a lot of backlash for not giving my dog away?

Sorry if this is a weird question, I just wonder this a lot.

No. Absolutely no. You do not have to give your dog away, nor would anyone in their right mind tell you to.
Thanks for this!

Mental Illness has much stigma and judgement made on it. It is easy to accuse the mentally ill of this and that. Cancer is a disease that we feel we are not responsable for.

I am confused as to why make a wish would give away someone elses pet to a cancer patient. they dont work like that. (I know the program and work closely with them as some of the people I work with are cancer patients)

make a wish program is a program where terminally ill people are granted trips or to meet a famous person, in short its a once in a life time opportunity... they are asked if money and time was not an issue what would you like to do... terminally ill know they dont have much time left so they usually do not ask for things that they will have to leave behind and worry about who will take care of that plant or pet. the terminally ill children that I know and did know asked for things like a new house for my parents, a trip to disney land, I want to meet the president or I want to meet harry potter. with only weeks left to live terminally ill children dont usually want to fall in love with a pet. they are more focused on giving away their pets and personal belongings, making out their wills with their therapists and nurses and doctors that are taking care of them. some even plan their own funerals with their parents.

sometimes a child who only has a few weeks to live will tell make a wish they would like a dog for their siblings or parents or best friend. then make a wish takes the terminally ill child to the local aspca and lets the child pick out their siblings/ parents or friend dog and then helps the terminally ill child plan a party or other occasion where they can surprise their family or friends with the newly purchased pet.

but make a wish never gives away other peoples pets to a terminally ill child they are working with. think of it this way would you a stranger walk into someones home that you do not know and snatch up their dog or cat and walk out the door with it saying sorry going to take this pet away from you and give it to sally in california who has cancer... no they dont do that.

if someone who no longer wants their pet the pets owner is free to give their no longer wanted pet to anyone that they want to. for example if I decide one day I dont want one of my dogs I can choose to find it a new home and I as the pets owner can decide if I want a cancer patient to have it.

but no organization that grants last wishes to those who are dying will just give away someone elses pet.
Thanks for this!

It's just stigma and stuff. I feel like people don't care about mentally ill adults, but will do anything for a physically ill person even if that means taking away something from the mentally ill adult. I just feel like I'm at the bottom of the food chain.

No but if something like this did happen you could always just visit him/ her a lot. I have service dog and I take him to the hospital a lot to visit the elderly. I either get quizzical or very dirty looks when I have him with me because I am young and I look able. Also when I park in handicapped spots . . .

You are entitled to your therapy dog. Mental health issues are as debilitating as physical issues. You deserve your dog, treasure him.
