I have bipolar disorder and ADHD. I am recovering from a recent bipolar episode. I was put in Invega Sustenna, and so far I am pleased with the results. My ADHD is currently untreated. I experience the full host of ADHD symptoms: inability to focus on tasks long enough to complete them, frequently moving from one incomplete task to the next, chronic procrastination, etc.. I am wondering what the best way to frame to my psychiatrist that I need medication for my ADHD is. I have to pass the CPA exam, volunteer, and get a job. Doing these things would be rather difficult without my ADHD medication. Some psychiatrist absolutely refuse to administer ADHD medication to patients who have bipolar disorder, worrying that the the medication will trigger mania or exacerbate current symptoms. I usually express how I feel to my psychiatrist and that, by being myself, usually works when I am trying to get my point across. Lately, I have been reading about recommendations on the best way to get this medication, but I am having second thoughts about following it because of not wanting an unfavorable outcome. Does anyone have suggestions as to the best way to ask for this medication is when you have bipolar disorder and are worried about being denied it for that reason?
