I am a 31-year-old male living a normal life full of stress and anxiety and a bunch of other challenges. Of course, I have had good days as well. My problem is that I am overwhelmed by all the challenges that have come at me in the past and all the challenges on my path going forward. I've survived 3 layoffs but am not sure I can find work if it happens again because I am an immigrant on a restrictive work visa. My wife's family is facing financial issues and they want me to help out which I am glad to do but only to a certain extent and there is some tension as I set those boundaries plus my wife doesn't get along well with my mom. (is that a surprise?) All this plus much more is weighing me down and I'd love to talk to someone 1-1 and at least get a patient hearing and ideally some sound unbiased advice and encouragement. I must mention that baring the occasional spell I am in no way depressed but I am now becoming more and more numb and indifferent to life and all the stress. I have seen a therapist in the past with specific issues but didn't find it very helpful. This time all I want is someone to hear me out like I mentioned before.
My question, particularly to any therapists out there, would it be ok/ unethical for me to see a therapist for this? |

Hello and welcome to PC!
I think your reasons for wanting to see a therapist are valid. Going through layoffs, financial issues and family tension are all very real sources of stress that could weigh down on anyone's mood. |

You seek validation - and you definitely HAVE IT! You need no permission to see a therapist. You need not have the people in your life approve of it. Looking for a way to manage your pressures in what is obviously an overstretched life is of your right to do so. In fact, I recommend it. I really feel for you as I - and we - understand how the pressures placed upon us can negatively impact one's mental health. So I say make that appointment.

I think many people in your situation seek the help of a therapist. They can be a great support, source of guidance, and sounding board. I don't have stats to support this, but I am guessing that more people without mental illness (who just need the support and guidance) see therapists than people with mental illness. For many, the experience need only last for a short period.

New members benefit greatly from perusing the many forums available here...lots to explore. Also after 5 approved posts members have the option to join the chatrooms..or chat one on one with other members. Should you have any questions on navigating this site, please don't hesitate to private message me or any of the other Community Liaisons who will be more than happy to help. Just click on the screen name above my avatar. Please be kind & generous to yourself ak1728, and welcome to P.C __________________ The devil whispered in my ear, "You cannot withstand the storm."
