I feel like an oddball when it comes to mental health issues. My doctor is pretty well-known in her field and I've seen her for about 8 years but she hasn't given me a clear diagnosis. I've mainly had depressive episodes but at times she says I have bipolar "features", like insomnia and irritability. It's hard enough having mental health problems but I wish at least I fit into a specific category. Oh, I also have post-trauma issues due to childhood abuse. Anyone else out there like me?

You would be all alone if you DID have a clear diagnosis! Not kidding!

Personally, I believe how a person views themselves is more important that how others view them. Professionals can help give you the tools to work through whatever forces you are facing including a vocabulary and means of sorting through your life's drama, for the most part.

Maybe you need a set of fresh eyes, second opinion.
As for Bipolar , you really don’t want the “ label” unless it’s true. Just having it has caused me grief in numerous ways. Your being treated ? Treating the symptoms that are causing you problems will happen whether you have a nailed down diagnosis or not. But I think after seeing someone for that long they would at least give you a clearer picture of what they “ think” Obviously your insurance company is being billed, what diagnosis are they using ???

I don't have a clear diagnosis. My first doctor said to give it 6 months and he would have a better idea. Now my new doctor says she isn't sure how to diagnose me and we will just have to wait to see if I have any additional episodes.
It feels uncomfortable not knowing. I like to have a strategy for how to deal with life situations and it is hard to plan ahead when I'm not quite sure what to expect. The good news is most of the therapy and meds are similar for a broad spectrum of issues, so I'm able to be treated effectively even without solid answers as to why I need treatment. 8 years seems like a long time to go without answers though... |

As you can see, you are not alone. I was misdiagnosed for years and not only in mental health, but also in my physical health. I googled my symptoms and narrowed done some of the options myself.

I don't have a diagnosis that warrants being on meds. I definitely need the meds though.
