So I really want to change my life and turn over a new leaf, to use a cliche, but I am struggling with intrusive thoughts. The content often varies but they are distracting and occasionally disturbing. I read for an hour then thumb back through the 20-25 pages and realize with horror that I didn't comprehend or I don't even remember anything I read, or I find that I am still staring at the same page I was an hour ago because the inside of my head is a shouting match between 15 different thoughts none of which have anything to do with the words on the page. I have been trying to get back into an old hobby recently as well only to find myself getting irrationally angry because I'm rehashing hostile conversations I had like 3 years ago for whatever reason. Typing this up took longer than it should have because in the middle of it I found myself scrolling through the Instagram of some celebrity.

Do you have a therapist? I would think a professional could help you with them .

The stuff you have been reading must have been boring for you. Try stuff that interests you more.

Journaling can really get things out of your head. When you get it on paper, you don't have to keep it in your head. If it's about a person, you can talk on paper and say the things you wished you'd said.

Hi ... I can relate to when it comes to reading a book ...I too need to go back and re-read what read ....because of racing thoughts. ...tho it's been a while since I picked up a book and after I read Your post I'm wondering if it's the reason why I've been hesitant to pick up a book again
I know I don't have answers to what Your going through but You're not alone ....I do find I'm able to focus on articles on PC homepage especially about issues I can relate to perhaps that might help Hang in there and please stay safe .... |

It may help if you try reading the book out loud. That can help keep you focused as you are using not only your mind but your voice and your hearing.

I have the same problem.
From what I read from many psychoterapy books I understood that it is a common problem. We do not know how to properly live in the present moment. Of course if something is very interesting, like computer game, we can concentrate at it. But most events of the day are just boring... Only week ago I found and read the good old book called "You're in Charge: A Guide to Becoming Your Own Therapist" by Janette Rainwater. In it you will find the explanation what is going on and what to do |
