Lately I’ve been laughing for no reason. Or the reason is really dumb. But I’ll start uncontrollably laughing and I’ll have to excuse myself from the room so I can calm down. This happens mostly with my mom but it happened a couple times last therapy session and she just stared at me. She cracked a smile once when the laughter came on suddenly and out of nowhere.

But I don’t get why this is happening and it just started in the last couple weeks.

Does anyone have this happen or know why it happens?

Hi Mountaindewed, are you a Christian? Sometimes Spirit filled Christians can have this occur when the Holy Spirit moves on them. How do you feel after your laugher? Happier I hope Laughing for no reason or at dumb stuff?.

Perhaps it is some kind of nervous laughter? Is there any pattern or recurring element in the situations you find yourself laughing? That happens sometimes to my dad as well so i'd say it is not too uncommon. Sending many safe, warm hugs to BOTH you, @Mountaindewed, your Family, your Friends and ALL of your Loved Ones! Keep fighting and keep rocking NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, OK?!

I’m not a Christian. I just feel really out of control when I’m laughing. Which is why I walk out of the room when it happens. In therapy there’s not much I can do except put my shirt over my mouth to hide my smile and try to just breathe. I was watching dumb TV this morning which made me laugh in a good way.

That’s why I think it could just be nervous laughter. But I’ve heard it can also be a sign of several mental illnesses. Or an infection that causes mental confusion.

Is it a nervous laugh? Or true laugh at funny things?

I laugh a lot but it’s because I find many things funny. Yes I’ve been known to step out because I couldn’t stop laughing at something. My whole family is this way, it’s not a nervous laugh or mental confusion. We just like to laugh.

If you were laughing at something dumb you saw on tv, I could relate to that.

Having said that, if you think it’s excessive and it bothers you maybe you could ask your t what they think it might be?

What kinds of thoughts are in your head while you laugh. ? Can you relate a particular thought to this.Or ruminations about a past event or anything like that ? My sudden laughter happens during rumination. But it happens in private.

I used to get this at the most inconvenient moments. I remember having it in a funeral, and also right in the middle of a math class. with the funeral, it was just embarrasssing, they were laying the gal to rest and I was sat in the back row laughing for no reason at all. in math, it was because the teacher mentioned number 11, their's nothing funny about the number 11- but school called me 11 for some time after that as it just cracked me up for some reason.

now I get it when ever a serious comercial comes on tv. I see the cat's protection one, fall about laughing at the question of I wonder if they take dogs and stay like that for ages. I saw one about poor kids in africa and burst out laughing too. both comercials are very serious indeed, but I can't help it. something In my brain triggers and I just laugh about it.

I laugh when I’m in therapy because I’m nervous. And it’s how I’m dealing with my nervousness. I think I may also be dealing with hypomania and I have heard laughter can be a symptom of mania, but I’m not sure.

I don’t even know what I’m thinking about. I just burst out laughing suddenly when things get quite. I think my therapist thinks I’m acting like a ****. Especially when I’m just smiling when she’s talking.

I cracked up when Natasha Richardson who played the mom in The Parent Trap died. My mom told me and I just burst out laughing due to the shock of it.

I love laughter. I love it. It is the best release. Sometimes I can feel deep down that I need a good “crying “ laugh. We had game night last night. And I laughed so hard I was crying and I felt so much better. The crying laughter is the best however weird that sounds. I’m super prone to the giggles. It usually starts with something with my family and it keeps back in. Lord help
Me if I’m with a person who shares the same moment with me and we make eye contact somewhere. I had to leave an AA meeting with my sponsor because we caught the giggles so bad we would be disturbing the meeting if we stayed. I cry easily too. Not weeping but anything I feel strongly about-love-joy-anger. There are always tears. I always try and tell people it’s me, it’s not the bipolar. It’s just me.

I don’t laugh at people. Like if something goofy happens and no one is hurt of course I’m human. But “mean” laughter is a different level that isn’t part of that for me. I don’t know if I just side tracked things but thought I’d share.
