The other day I was driving down the highway and I noticed a car with its flashers on and several people standing beside it. I almost drove by but decided to stop and check on them. The one of the men explained that they had run out of gas and asked if I could drive him into the next town about four miles down the road to get look for a gas can. I let him get in my car and drove him to town, filled a couple gas cans and then drove him back to his car and the other people he was traveling with. Was this a bad decision by me?

Hi annoyed. Truth is your decision was so civical that unless something else happened, like you had to pay for the gas or you got robbed, I think you could consider it as a very good decision and thing to do. How do you feel with yourself? I know very few people in my area would have stopped. Have a good day.

Well... this was kind of you. But, of course, these days (at least where I live) it could well have turned out differently. It's become a much more potentially dangerous world nowadays than it was for most of my life. (And I've been around for a while!)
 You mentioned this was on a highway. I know, where I live (which is a major metropolitan area) it is typically recommended that people not stop on a highway to help someone due to the potential for it to cause accidents. In recent years, a number of good samaritans have been hit by other cars speeding past. It is generally recommended that, rather than stop, a person call (if they can) 911 and report the problem so that appropriate emergency vehicles can be dispatched to provide assistance. However, from what you wrote, it sounds as though you were perhaps out in a rural area? So, under those circumstances, what is typically recommended where I live may not apply. Anyway I'm glad this experience turned out well for you. I'm sure the people you helped were grateful.

I knew a young lady who got into similar situation.On a winter evening she ran out of gas on a less travelled route.She was trying to figure out her best course of action and a guy stopped and asked if she needed help.He offered her to drive her to nearby gas station,so that she could buy a gas can.And she was really scared to do so.Then the guy says...young lady,soon it is gonna be dark and you are not safe here.I understand all your life you were warned not to get into a car with strangers. But you need my help right now and I am not leaving you here for any longer alone.Take a picture of me and send to your parents and note down my car make ,model and plate number and text your parents and tell them you are getting in my car.He showed her his ID to confirm his name.

I always stop & help even when I lived in Los Angeles & some of that was before cell phones existed. Now I live in rural Ky & I always check if people are stopped or some when they are just walking along my road if I don't know them. One guy was walking with his bike along the rural highway at dusk. Stopped & picked him up & tossed his bike in the bed of my truck. He was never going to make it to where he was actually heading for. Hadn't eaten either. So I BBQ'd dinner & let him clean up & do some laundry & took him the 2 hour drive to where he was heading the next day. He was thankful & appreciated having someone who listened &
to talk to. Sounded like he was trying to figure out a lot of things in his life & just needed someone to care. Have been first one at the scene of several accidents mostly single car accidents. Never know the cause but always on the phone with 911 while checking it out. Oh yes, my strangest was herding a cow to keep it off the highway at midnight so no one would get hurt until the sheriff could come & help me get the gate open & back into the field. So many people say it is stupid of me to do these things. Actually one questionable guy on the road near my farm I had climb into my truck bed rather than into my truck with me to take him where he wanted to go after I found out he ran out of gas, left the car in the middle of the road & walked off. Car was towed, I found the guy near my farm. Sheriff was looking for him & so I let him know exactly where he was. People are less likely to do anything to people in rural America cause they know we carry so don't take any chances. __________________  Leo's favorite place was in the passenger seat of my truck.
