I know that feelings of nostalgia are usually attributed to older people, @rdgrad15, but young people can certainly feel nostalgic. Who knows why? I think of depression as a possibility, but maybe not.

I've even known perfectly so-called "normal" children who had a sense of nostalgia for something.

I was a sensitive, dreamy-minded child and had strong feelings of nostalgia when I was young, no doubt about it. But I was also a traumatized child and one with mental illness.

I won't minimize the feelings you have; I don't know why you have them, but if you say you do, you do. I won't doubt you.

Question of the Month

Alas, it worked much better when the QOTM was a FORUM, but the powers that be.....

I know most people prefer social media and like you, I'm an introvert too. But I still need face to face contact. As humans we are hard wired to seek connections, and I strongly feel that even Facetime (which I even never used) doesn't substitute for face to face contact.

Even using emojis doesn't always communicate the right tone. So I'm nostalgic for things like hearing the tone of voice or seeing the person's face, in person. So many people want to email or text me, they never want to CALL anymore even. The phone has been around for centuries but now people want to type words on a screen. I wonder what Alexander Bell would think of cell phones.

Anyway I thought I'd find other threads you started, as I found the most/least favorite holidays thread.

Now that yet another year has gone, I think more of not only last year but the last few decades. I listen to a lot of music from my youth more often as I get older, as it reminds me of simpler times. And not just in the country in general, but in my life. I mean even stuff like telemarketing calls were rare. Ah, I miss that silence. We got a wrong number once in awhile or a sales call. NOW we get bombarded.

Guess I'm nostalgic for the days of more privacy too, more control over who has your information. I mean we didn't have databases of people's info everywhere.

I could write a book on what I'm nostalgic for.....And since it's a new year we are getting that optimistic message from the media as usual. I'm reading a book along those lines: Bright-Sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking has Underminded America by Barbara Ehrenreich. Eye opening....

You are wise beyond your years. Sometimes I feel like I'm 100 as I've been through so much. When I was your age (ha ha I'm old enough to say that), I didn't feel nostalgia much. But it was a different world then, as the Internet was still in its infancy. We still talked on the phone or met face to face.

I agree, I think it's easier to get nostalgic now than it used to be. Social media will now remind you of specific events or photos you took from the past, Facebook still reminds me of photos I took back in 2012 when I was in college which were just random photos of the campus so nothing special. It's like cool, thanks for the unnecessary reminder lol. I know others post more meaningful photos so I'm sure some people get even more nostalgic, also I've noticed people like texting more than calling too and honestly I've become that way myself.

Yeah I can see how the holidays could make you feel nostalgic since I'm sure the way you hold celebrations now has changed compared to when your son was little.

I can definitely see depression triggering an unusual amount of nostalgia especially if the person with depression wasn't always that way. That's probably where it crosses the line into unhealthy rumination and therapy is needed since there's a fine line between typical nostalgia and a persistent and never ending state of ruminating for what used to be to the point where you can't function in life anymore. Also I was like you as a kid where I would randomly feel nostalgic too for some reason and I was very dreamy as well. I guess some are just more prone to it than others and I honestly don't know why it happens in kids but it does happen.

Just curious but we’re you/are you called a deep thinker as a child or even now?

I notice you write with depth and thought in replies to others, it’s a nice trait, but wonder if it’s a sign of you being generally a deep thinker?

I guess I could be a deep thinker, never really thought of that but I might be since I do tend to think a lot.

It's certainly a question worth considering. People who think deeply, regardless of age, tend to be easily given to nostalgia. Consider the arts, especially the literary arts, and specifically poets, plenty of whom died at young ages. They were thinkers, surely given to nostalgia.

It does, but rarely understood and often judged by those who fear- until they understand, anyway.
