Need Help

I was recently released from my mental health providers. They said based on my diagnosis's they can't continue to treat me. I've been with them for two years and it's just now become an issue. They set me up with another med management dr out of town. That isn't going to work for me, transportation issues to go out of town. I've called everywhere I can find and they all say they can't help me. What am I supposed to do? I'm done.....

@jenmossy welcome to MSF. I am sorry you are having troubles with mental health providers. That sounds stressful.

Have you talked to your primary care doctor. Sometimes they will prescribe mental health medicines.

Many people use video connections and mailing of prescriptions. Could you contact the people and ask them what virtual options are available.

I am not aware of online doctors and how reliable they are, but if you are willing to research it you may find legitimate options there.

How often would you have to go out of town? You might not need to be reviewed as often now. I know its not ideal at all but don’t do anything that’s going to make you run out of meds. You need to see someone, whoever and wherever that may be.

Hang in there I know it’s tough.

what is your diagnosis? how weird that they have treated you with that diagnosis for 2 years and now suddenly they can't help you.

Please write to them explaining that you have transportation issues and cannot access the doctor to whom they have referred you, and ask them for another referral. It is their duty to terminate you appropriately and find a realistic successor who will work for you. They cannot just drop you. Apparently they did provide a referral but it is not a realistic option. I would go a little formal and write "I have concerns about the termination procedure. I cannot make use of the referral provided and need an alternative prescriber whom I can access. Until one is found, please continue seeing me for medication management".

If that does not work, go with the above advice: telehealth or infrequent visits out of town.

Also, do you have access to mail order pharmacy that can see you a 3 month worth supply of your meds?

actually, it does not sound like in North Carolina the physician must provide a referral

"Termination of the Physician-Patient Relationship
The Board recognizes the physician’s right to choose patients and to terminate the professional relationship with
them when he or she believes it is best to do so. That being understood, the Board maintains that termination of
the physician-patient relationship must be done in compliance with the physician’s obligation to support
continuity of care for the patient.
The decision to terminate the relationship must be made by the physician personally. Further, termination must
be accompanied by appropriate written notice given by the physician to the patient or the patient’s representative
sufficiently far in advance (at least 30 days) to allow other medical care to be secured. A copy of such notification
is to be included in the medical record."

I also found out the hard way tgat just because we are given a referral doesn't mean that the referral MD will take us & then it takes even more time to find someone else..... even with 3 months of med prescriptions it may take more time than that. My MD closed his practice & went to work in a hospital miles away & couldn't continue prescribing the meds he waa prescribing for me. Had one clinic stop prescribing the med I was on & that created a whole different issue that was common all around. Finding alternate solutions is not easy so I understand your stress & concern.....but that doesn't provide a solution. Seems like each solution is individually different
