I know it's nice to bring the kids to see the animals at the zoo or wildlife park , its a good opportunity to learn about them in a safe environment . They are well fed , and taken care of everyday ,
cleaned up after , etc. This morning I visited a local wildlife park
and when I looked at these two foxes , they looked so sad , I don't know what a happy fox would look like , but I just got that impression that they were . I felt like letting them out of their prison cells and shed a tear as I watched them disappear into the woods . I know these animals were probably captured at a young age and some were possibly born there , so it would be very hard for them to survive on their own . There were black bears , wolves , raccoons , bald eagles , moose , deer , lynx , bobcats , otters ,
and many others , all locked up in their cages . There is no cruelty involved , I just had a thought , like in a movie , where I would let them all free . Thanks for listening to my silly story . lol

I get the same way Babysteps. I see those poor animals in little cages and peple gawking at them. But ten I remember there must be a reason they're confined. Mabye they were injured or like you said rescued as babies and rehabed in a zoo. But I see how that would make you sad

I know what you mean, they do look bored. Ideally it's always best for them to be free . It also depends on the zoo and how good it is. You know what really bother me are circus's. I never take my girls to see them. The elephants are very sensitive to pain so when they tap them on the foot it hurts -that why some elephants have gone on rampages and trampelled people. I think circus's have suffered a big loss of business. Thanks for sharing.

Have to tell you guys...my mom's house in Mississippi backed onto a highway so there was a high ridge behind her house.

She kept telling my sister that she saw a mountain lion on that ridge. My sister kept telling her she was seeing things. (My mom drank and didn't have real good eyesight.)

Then one Thanksgiving, we all were there at her house. Suddenly, she looked out the window and started shouting, "There it is, everyone come here and look." There was a mountain lion or cougar just strolling along the top of the ridge behind her house, not in any particular hurry. This was only about 100 feet beyond her back door. He kind of paused a few seconds looking around and then continued strolling.

My brother-in-law took off out the back door after it. I couldn't believe him. He followed it and he got about fifty feet behind it along the ridge. It stopped and turned its head completely around and looked at him. Then he continued on.

Now, this is not a rural area. There is a major university only a couple miles from there and it is a populated area. But my sister said there used to be a couple who had a farm and turned it into a wildlife refuge but they had licensing problems and had to get rid of the animals. She thinks that they kept a few and that this cougar is one of them. He just strolls along, not looking for food or anything, he didn't have that posture. He was just out looking around.

My mom said, "There! I TOLD you I wan't crazy!"

There's a place near here that has a small wildlife zoo. I went to see it a couple weeks ago. One enormous black bear alone in a cage -- but he was gnawing on a big chew toy like a dog, didn't seem that unhappy. But the bobcat and cougar -- both alone in cages of bare dirt -- they looked unhappy. Around the inside of the (lone) wolf's enclosure was a well-worn path where I suppose he paces endlessly at night. But who knows. The cormorant obviously had an injured wing that had never healed right, a deer sat with its head constantly tilted, and rumor has it many of the animals came there injured or sick.

Happy foxes are a lot like happy dogs -- except they can arch their backs like cats. They chase their tails, they loll around on the ground, they chew on things, and if you speak to them, they'll sit up, cock their heads and perk up their ears and listen -- if they're used to you, of course. Otherwise, they take off like rockets.

I don't mind those Safari-type parks, where the animals have lots of land to roam. Don't like zoos though. I went to one once and the animals were obviously not cared for properly at all. I hear it's improved now but the sight of those animals...
