among other jobs at work, I'm the company's payroll administrator. This means that I have to set new employees up on payroll.
Now call me crazy, but with me, the first thing I want to do when I start a new job is make sure that I get added to payroll, so whatever forms they give me to fill out, I fill out on the spot. Based on our recent hiring's I'm an anomaly. We've hired a bunch of people lately, and not one of them has completed the payroll forms in a timely fashion or more importantly correctly. I've had to chase people for them. What gives??? Do people not want to be paid??? And the tax forms. Ok - so nobody likes tax forms but there are 2 that have to be filled out and honestly the government has made them really easy to read and fill out. It tells you what the basic deduction is and then asks simple questions, like "Do you have dependants under the age of 18? if so claim 7,500 per dependant." This is not rocket science. But no 1/2 our new hires are confused by the tax forms. What really baffles me is that you can't start a new job in Canada without filling out these tax forms, and this is not their first job for the people we're hiring, so theyu have to have seen the forms before. But apparently when confronted with forms - they get stupid. Then there's the RRSP (Canada's version of a 401K) contribution. It's really simple. We give you a selection of funds to invest in, you fill out a 2 page form, saying what funds you want, and how much you want to invest from each paycheck. The company matches contributions. This is free money for you. So you'd think people would get it right. Nope. !/2 the forms I get back are incomplete and that's if I get the form at all. I've got employees who could be getting matching funds from the company but aren't because they haven't bothered to send in the form. That's just dumb in my opinion. If I sound a little frustrated I am. We've hired 7 people in the past month, and the only person who filled out their payroll correctly and on their first day was the 23 year old intern from Germany who is working for us for 6 months. She shares my philosophy about getting paid. --splitimage |
