We don't celebrate it in our country. Don't know of the significance of it. Is it religious, or social? Is it instead of Christmas? I don't understand. Hope some one can explain it to me. Happy thanksgiving anyway.
Thanks for this!

what is thanksgiving?
For other uses, see Thanksgiving (disambiguation).

November 25, 2010 (U.S.)Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in Canada and the United States. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude in general. While perhaps religious in origin, Thanksgiving is now primarily identified as a secular holiday.[citation needed]
The date and location of the first Thanksgiving celebration is a topic of modest contention. The traditional "first Thanksgiving" is the celebration that occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621. The Plymouth celebration occurred early in the history of what would become one of the original thirteen colonies that became the United States. The celebration became an important part of the American myth by the 1800s.[citation needed] This Thanksgiving, modeled after celebrations that were commonplace in contemporary Europe, is generally regarded as America's first. Elementary school teacher Robyn Gioia has argued that the earliest attested "thanksgiving" celebration in what is now the United States was celebrated by the Spanish on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida.[1][2] Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving dinner is held on this day, usually as a gathering of family members and friends.[citation needed]

Hope that helped Crystalrose

wow thanks Babysteps. I have questions
is it more important than christmas or less important? Or is it an individual thing?
Do people buy each other gifts?
Also the only thing i have seen on thanksgiving is a group of people sitting at a dinner table holding hands saying what they are thankful for, is this realistic or dramatised?
Thanks for this!

It started with an indian and pilgram coming together banquet style.

We continue the food - But add all the things and people we are thankful for
Thanks for this!

Its less important then christmas for alot of people but me I love thanksgiving. No gifts. People usually do go around the table saying what they are thankful for (not so sure about the handholding thing though lol)

What everyone has said, plus you eat waaaaayyyy tooo much food, turkey or ham (unless you are a vegetarian) lots of good deserts. Afterwards the guys sit around and watch football, the girls catch up on family goings on, you know whose pregnant, whose getting married, whose getting divorced, etc...

Anyway its basically a time to spend with your family together... Traditionally it is meant to be a time of reflection and gratitude for good things in your life, sometimes we need to be reminded of how lucky many of us are in ways we often do not realize.
Thanks for this!
