I'm really not sure at all. My friend wants me to be his daughter's godfather, solely a sign of endearment, but what does that generally entail? (Not that my friend knows either.)

There are 2 traditional reasons; to provide spiritual instruction to the child. The second is that should the biological father ever become unable for whatever reason to raise his son, well, that is where you would step in. Goodluck!
Thanks for this!

Yeah I thought it was if something were to happen to the parents the child would be cared for by the "godfather" but I kinda also heard that it was a catholic thing to. I think NuckingFutz had a good definition.

Neither of us are Catholic; he's a good friend I've helped a great deal in the past.

Refer to yourself as “The Don.” You’re a godfather. You’ve earned it.
I could actually get away with that.

To pray for and be an example of faith to the child.

Yes that was a very informative link Byz. it would be nice to speak with the parents about what their idea of a Godfather is. If they're having a party it would be nice to give a gift/card and for sure visit on holidays.
