Today, June 19th, is Juneteenth in the US. It is a day to honor African American heritage that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865.
Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1st, 1863. Meaning that slavery would be illegal after that date. It wasn't until June 18th, 1865 that General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Texas to take over the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves. On June 19th, 1865 General Granger proclaimed that under "General Order #3" that all slaves were free in the state of Texas. Today is a day for reflection and celebration. Think about it, the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on Jan 1, 1863. The slaves in Texas were not freed until June 19, 1865. That's 2.5 years. |

Happy Juneteenth everyone! Happy dances that slavery was abolished. Also sending out warm prayers for those people forced into the illegal slave industry as well.
