I often wonder? The other day my power went out (Nothing no internet no access to the other world cyber space) What would you do? and how would you go on if the power outage lasted for awhile?

Likely I would be doing a lot more than I am doing now.

I was without power for 4 days after a hurricane.
Mostly I read, listened to a portable radio, went to bed when the sun went down, got up when the sun came up, and tried to remember what a/c felt like. LOTS of cool showers ![]() |

I had no electric last December after a winter storm. Four long days. I couldn't use the fireplace because the clutter was so bad it was a fire hazard. I slept a lot.

As Byzantine said, I'd probably be doing more than what I'm doing now. I'd probably be exercising, reading, listening to music, journalling, meditation, getting together with friends...lots of things come to mind.

I lost power for several days and several times last winter, the longest was for 21 days. I am fortunate in that I have a back-up generator but it is only for the necessities: frig, microwave, water/septic system (in the boonies), and basic heat. I relearned how to play many card games, played backgammon, read a lot, and played with the dog. These are the days I wonder why I moved here especially since I am not a winter weather fan in the first place.
I had to laugh in a class I took recently, a prof asked name 3 things you can't live w/o. Some of the older class members listed things like: electricity, plumbing, cars, refrigerators, microwave/oven. Some of the class listed: ipods, computers, tv. All a matter of perspective. What can you not live w/o? |

I am terrified of the dark. Full Stop. I always have a lamp and some music on when I go to bed, I never sleep in the dark.
I had a black out a few weeks ago and I was in such a panic I was nearly in tears. What's more my laptop battery only lasts 5 minutes now if it's not plugged into the wall so I was literally plunged into darkness once it ran out. I was terrified. Luckily one of my friends called me to keep me company and even offered to come over. Even if he was paying me out the whole time. A few years ago we had a heatwave and the power went out at some houses for days, peoples animals were dying, food was going off. I ended up making a fridge tent just to keep cool. Lucky for me my power was only out for a few hours, and it was in the day so I wasn't in so much of a panic. I find that once I get used to not having my laptop for a while (when I have to get it fixed and it's gone for weeks) I can cope, but as soon as I get it back I'm on here forever. |

I am glad I'm older and lived half my life without computers and other "modern" conveniences. I'm also glad I have an RV and camp and enough money so if I were to have a bad power outage I could go elsewhere.
