My daughter was assigned an art project where she had to do 'quilling'. I had no idea what this was and have never seen it before. I ended up helping her a little and it was so much fun. I went to Walmart to see if they had a quilling tool but they didn't, so we just used a wooden skewer. It would be easier if you have the tool. I became so enthralled and good, that I made a butterfly.

I think I'm going to take this up as a hobby. Here's a video of the basic technique and shapes one can make from a simple paper circle. This video is good because with Xmas coming up, you can make Xmas decorations:

Thanks for posting that Fins. At 1st glance it looks hard but once you get the basic technique down it really fun. It's hard to believe a person can shape a circle into squares, triangles, tear drop etc. It also requires concentration so it's good to do if someones struggling with over thinking issues. I researched online and if you become good, you can sell your creations.

Quilling! This we used to do with bird feathers, the ones with very thin and malleable quills in the centre and with peacock feathers from the orient, oh they were exquisite

We have done some in very fine foils and tissue papers over recent years and given them as gifts to family, using some variant methods of forming similar to ribboning having to be very precise and careful with the papers and foils because they are just so very delicate

I am sure you will enjoy this passtime, there is nothing the mind cannot create that the fingertips cannot translate into beauty

I never thought about that - thanks for the suggestion. My dollar store has a large craft isle - amazing what you can get for a dollar.

Thanks to everyone who showed an interest in my new hobby. Here's an image I found of a fish - I'm not at that level yet lol.

I got a Quilling kit for easter once when I was young but I never quite figured out how to do it. Those things you have posted are lovely, though!

Thanks for posting this Lynn. It DOES look like a lot of fun and a good way to take a break from the chaos of life. I can see how easy it would be to put everything aside and get lost in the creative world. Good luck with your projects.

What did your daughter make?
