Our family learned a very valuable lesson on Thanksgiving. Never put a hot Pyrex dish on a cold counter. It will explode. We had sausage stuffing everywhere. That and glass. It went into the gravy and sweet potatoes.

The good news is Pyrex is sending my cousin (who's dish it was) a new set of dishes. She is getting 6 dishes and 6 lids.

How's that for customer service?

Yeah, pyrex really doesn't like temperature shock, especially with water...

Ever seen corelle break? Thats pretty spectacular too.

Corning class used to own Pyrex years ago then they sold the name to a european company who is cutting corners and using a different ingredient. You can no long trust the pyrex name. The new set will explode more than likely. The funny thing is, the european version of pyrex is made from the original ingredients. They changed it for American to make it more "green"....yeah more green lining their pockets because the new ingredient is cheaper.

There's a story about it in the January 2011 Consumer Reports. They have changed the formulation of the glass.

That was extremely generous of them. Drastic temperature changes with glass is never a good idea. These new "glasses" (pyrex/correlle) may be a bit more durable but as you saw instead of just breaking, they explode. Each one of them comes with a warning. As they age they become more fragile.

I'm sorry, I have to ask, why ever would she put the hot dishes directly on the counter without a trivet, hotpad holder, or even a kitchen towel?

I've been using Correlle for 25 years. I've only had one break in that time about 15 years ago and I'm still finding shards.

We were rushing to get things out of the oven and other things into the oven and it was chaotic and I guess my Aunt didn't think to put anything under it and just quickly sat it down on the counter not expecting it to explode.

It was kind of fun though watching my Uncle very meticulously pick the marshmallows off the sweet potatoes and then very carefully scrape the top layer off so we could put new marshmallows on top. He was being very precise and made sure no one talked to him or touched him.

Pyrex is a good brand.. i've had Pyrex since i could remember... they're very durable and long lasting, but it is true that it does explode when it is hot and placed on a cold surface... it's good of Pyrex to send over new sets of dishes... what i do is i put something under the Pyrex something like a cooling rack while serving good day to you
