HELP!

can someone help me. the parents went and got fast internet and i had to get a wireless thingy to hook up to the modem. the modem works alone hooked up to the desktop, but the wireless thingy will not install and work with the modem. its like they dont get along?!? i spent 2 days trying with it and having father yelling at me. and i am so stress out. too many freaking wires! the thingy is a netgear n300 wireless router and it will not connect and work with the freaking modem!!!

Is there a tech support number with the instructions? I had to call tech support to hook my router up.

yes there is, but i dislike talking to people in person and really dont like using phones.

I have no problem trying to offer some kind of help if you can't get a hold of tech support. However, I would highly suggest tech support first.

Do you have a setup disk that came with the router? That may have some troubleshooting info that could be useful as well

well my dad called netgear for help today and after 50 mins of working with the nice, but launguage challeged conversation it was found that the pci card was faulty! so dad is gonna return it to store and try another one...crossing fingers!

I'm so glad things are somewhat sorted. I have used netgear and never had any real problems. Hopefully thing will sort themselves out with the new one

back to needing help!! the desktop with the modem and router works and is configed for the desktop and dad's pc, but my pc will not pick up the network? ARHG! it says no networks in range and in the tray the radio (little cross) is dark blue and says data frame errors check wep settings?

Do you have any idea what operating system you are running?

yep, xp home. was told it could be the lan device in the laptop going bad? it was working for a min about 24 mins ago then it did the data frame error thingy. if it is the lan thingy in the pc, where is it and how do i get to it to put a new one in?

If that's what it is then it goes beyond my capabilities. I do not dissect laptops. Desktops I could do but everything is so crammed in the laptop I have no idea where to look. At that point I would contact a computer guru and have them replace it.

I haven't done much with XP for quite a while but I think I rememebr a few things.

Have you tried "connecting to a network" through network sharing center?

i have no idea what i have done so far, but the netgear lady on the phone did a quick step by step to try to set it up, that just hit me, and she said since it was not working to contact the manufacturer for the pc. so i just did a quick wireless usb network thingy. would that be good enough. though i dont like the idea of 4" of plastic sticking out the side or back.

The idea of four inches of plastic stcking out is not very attractive but if it gets you working for the time being then it's not all bad. I know I have had some issues where I wound up attached to a wire for a time but at least I could get online.

if netgear did some trouble shooting with no luck then next step would have to be puter folks. I can do a lot to get thigns to work that are just not communicating properly but if there is something not working that may need to be replaced I am completely useless.
