Can I has this thread? I promise not to go overly political (no worries, I hate all major political parties here equally).

I visited 2 years ago! It was amazing. The dumplings and sausages were the best part.

That being said what is your favorite thing about living in the Czech Republic?

You have internet access in the Czech Republic? Isn't it like some really old place in like...the middle of nowhere? And isn't the country like..named Czechoslovakia?

Sorry I couldn't help myself.

Since Lastyearisblank asked what's your favourite thing, I have to ask - what's your least favourite thing about living in Czech Republic? Not the EU. Specific to Czech.

My favorite thing? Czech dark humour. The "cult" of Jara Cimrman, a made-believe overlooked genius (we wanted to elect him a greatest Czech, but alas, winner of the competion has to be real). Good Soldier Sweik is another cultural phenomenon that defines us (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Goo...k#Plot_summary). I also enjoy some of the food and beer (which goes well with roasted duck with dumplings and sauerkraut). The cities - most of them are overall aesthetically pleasing and there is a lot of history preserved. And good accessibility of other Europe

My least favorite thing? That we cannot be ourselves. We now have to follow american trends, just as we followed Moscow not so long ago. We celebrate Halloween, yet we have no idea what is Saint Wenceslas day.

I am an American of partial Czech ancestry. The Czechs have a very good reputation in Europe for being fair and educated. On the bad side, they smoke cigarettes and drink a lot. It's sad to hear that the Czech Republic is losing some of its traditions and that foreign traditions are infiltrating the culture. The Czech side of my family has great values - they are a tight knit family and, when my father was orphaned, they took him and his sister in and raised them. They are very good parents. The only problem is that they smoke and drink too much! Czechs are good people.

Smoking and drinking is very common in Europe and one cannot judge a people by whether they smoke or drink.
Thanks for this!

well, we do drink and smoke. It does not tell anything about us as a people. Besides that we like to unwind maybe?

Even Americans do not have to follow American trends...

It's not an official law, of course (stop nitpicking on my syntax, kthxbai!). I am just stating the fact that we follow American trends culturally and American course politically.
