Two half-grown squirrels were out today, and they seemed almost completely innocent of any dangers. My cats did not know what to do with them -- they came so close that both cats' noses appeared to touch the squirrels, while sniffing them. Sometimes a squirrel would advance on the cat, and the cat would leap out of the way. Cats could not figure them out.

Below is a picture of them, with my foot in the picture too. At one point I was crouched down, and one of the young ones went through my legs. I could have easily touched them.

The squirrels tried to interact with some grown ones, too, but those did not seem to know what to do with them, or want to have much to do with the young ones. These squirrels need adult supervision, or they may not survive the spring:
