After weeks of waiting, Ive got the info Ive been dreading- my hard drive is dead. EVERYTHING on my laptop is irretrievable, 10,000 photos, 3,000 songs, over 100 videos including from a trip overseas, my journal for the last 3 years, all my old study notes and information. I cant get any of it back. And its hit me really hard guys. Photos from my birthday were on there, everything. I know someone is bound to say 'Well you should have backed it all up', and some of it was. But backing up 100GB isnt cheap, and I dont have a burner for dvds to save my videos. Im absolutely gutted right now, I just jumped back in bed to spend my day crying instead. Maybe some sleeping. My laptop was all I had to keep me sane and now its all gone. My grandparents said they would get a new hard drive installed but whats the point when there isnt anything on there.

Any chance for a second opinion? |

I told my grandfather when he took it in that no matter what I want my old hard drive back. If the police can get info then surely there is a way to get this info too. To say that Im absolutely gutted is putting it very mildly. I wont rest until I find a way. I Googled if its possible to get info off a dead hard drive and it seems that there is still a chance. I dont care if I have to save $300, I want my stuff back. This is the last thing I need right now. I am definitely going to search for a second opinion, and even then how am I to know that perhaps technology will allow it all to be retrieved in the future?

Are you certain that the hard drive failed and not a different part of the computer? Is it a laptop or PC?
There is a good chance you can recover data from the hard drive especially if it from a PC.

Its the hard drive. My aunties partner tried to read the hard drive on something he had and it wouldnt work, he thought something inside might be out of place because of the noise it was making. My grandparents took it somewhere and the guy in the store said its dead and everything is irretrievable. My grandparents were going to get a new hard drive put it, but I know switching on my laptop and seeing nothing on there will hit me hard.

Ugh the news gets worse- when he said everything was gone, he meant EVERYTHING. Not even programs like Microsoft word will be on there. It will cost, wait for it, $180 for a new hard drive to be installed, and that will give me not much more than a working laptop with NOTHING on it. Oh joy.

Wow, that sounds devastating. Sorry for what you're going through.
Having said that, I would strongly recommend getting a second opinion. The hard drive dying should not result in the data being destroyed as well. Recovery is just a little more work. |

So sorry - when my desktop fried, I tried to at least retrieve my pics, but they were gone, gone, gone. It was heart wrenching, I try to faithfully back up the unreplaceables, but you're right it's expensive! I wound up getting an external hard drive to transfer the photos and videos and important docs...

Im still not going to have my laptop back for at least another 4 days, its been about a month now. Im really struggling with it at the moment. I could really use someone to talk to and thats not exactly something I can do over the internet on a phone. Seeing my laptop with none of my stuff on it is going to hit me so hard, especially in the emotional state Im in right now, I am really scared how I will react. It might end up being my whole laptop that does up broken.

I'm so sorry Evening :-(
I had the same thing about three months ago, it was horrible. And as you say, lots of people said 'Was the stuff backed up?'... no, if it was I wouldn't be so upset! I found the computer shops I went to very unhelpful - they just wanted to install a new hd and wouldn't accept that I was more concerned about recovering the data that was on there than getting the computer working again. One thing somebody told me that might have been helpful though - apparently a good data recovery company should have these special sealed, dust-free chambers in which they can put a damaged hard drive and read stuff. That's how the police do it I imagine. Because most of the time the problem isn't that the data storage is damaged, it's that the parts that connect the hd to the rest of the computer are damaged. Sorry I can't be more detailed or give the proper name for this process! Needless to say the computer shop I went to couldn't do this, and by the time I went in to pick up the computer they had already replaced the hard drive and sent the original back to Toshiba for refund... They refunded my money after a lot of complaining, but I wish I'd known earlier about the data recovery chamber technique. I don't really know how/where you can find someone who can do this - as I say you need a specialized data recovery firm, not just your local computer shop. Does anyone know more than me? |

Thats does make me feel a bit better actually. I did have some stuff backed up, ironically I was about to back up a lot of new stuff when this actually happened. I had deleted about 20GB of stuff to make more space and I was then going to put things on USBs and disks. Of course that opportunity came a bit too late... We said no to a new hard drive, my aunties partner can install a new hard drive that will only cost $50 to buy, and install programs for me for free. And it will be a 1TB hard drive. Better than a new hard drive and 0 programs for $180. I did make it extremely clear that I wanted my old hard drive back because I refuse to believe everything is lost.

Well its been fixed, I STILL havent got it back though. And guys, I really dont think I can handle getting it back. All the programs will be different, everything will be gone. It just wont be my laptop. I can feel the anger already, Im going to flip when its right in front of me. I desperately need a punching bag, Ive been wanting one for months but I just cant afford it. Theyre only $60-$80, but I just cant get one. I need to vent a LOT of anger and it could be taken out on my laptop. Why did this have to happen...

I just bought a new internet USB, apparently something actually working is a little too much to ask. Now that I have the new hard drive no internet connections work on my laptop (its not just the new one, I tried a different internet USB before it). All I want is someone to talk to. Its like Im being stopped from having the opportunity to get help. Ive waited a month for my laptop, and god forbid that should be the end of the issue.
