I took a knitting class tonight, to learn to knit a cawl. It was really fun. I knew one of the other women in the class, as we'd taken the learn to knit a beret course together.

I'm using a really chunky yarn and 10 mm needles which seem huge compared to what I usually knit with. I've never knit with yarn this thick before - it's amazing how fast it knits up and how easy it is to see your stitches so you know where you are in the pattern.

Tonight I learned a new technique for making deliberate holes so it'll have kind of a lacy look.

I picked a multi-shade purple yarn for mine. I think it's going to look great when it's done.

I'm also about 2/3'rds done another beret.

Next week I take a learn to knit fingerless gloves class.

Good for you, splitimage. Had to look up the word:
  1. A net for confining the hair, worn by women.
  2. More rarely, a head-dress like a flat turban.
  3. Any kind of small net; a net.
Do any of these definitions accurately describe what a cawl is?

Erm no Byzantine.

What I'm talking about is basically a short loose tube that you wear around your neck, in place of a scarf. I've only ever heard them called a cawl. Mabe there's another name for them.

Hello Splitimage, I enjoy taking needlework classes also, tho I've never taken knitting, only crochet. Its fun to be in a class where everyone is working on a project together. Purple is my favorite color so I'm sure your caul will be beautiful! I've heard of making holes in knitting so the look will be lacy and that technique is one of the reasons I may make knitting my next class. I'm taking sewing right now. So far, I've made a tote bag which turned out okay except I made the straps too long so it hangs almost to my knees. Oh well, its nothing that can't be fixed! Next I will be making pajama bottoms. I'm excited as I've never made an item of clothing before.
I know you are going to have a lot of fun making your gloves.
