Does anyone else want to share what they are proud
of about family members who are disabled?
Just wanted to put a pic of my brother here
I have 6 brothers and this is my youngest
brother.
He learnt how to speak, count, and even read a little
from Sesame Street back in the late 60's.

Im proud of my disabled brother

I am proud of him because...
He coped eventually when I left home
and when his daddy died(my daddy too)
and when his big brother died
and he has OCD but he has avoided the loony bin
(thats how he says it)
love Robby Joey/Julia his sister xxxoooxxx

Hello Julia. What a beautiful picture and sorry that you shared with Psych Central. I dont think I have ever met anyone in America that was not helped by sesame street and Mister Rodgers. What a blessing that you r brother found something he liked and could learn from with his disabilities. One reason to be prud that Americaa and other countried are willing to help someone less fotunate an care about education for everyone. Take care Julia. Soidhonia

My mother works with teens who have things such as downs syndrome and autism and other similar issues. This one kid, Matthew, she's been working with since he was 9 (he's now 18). He has both Downs Syndrome AND mild autism. I remember once hearing someone say that all pregnant women should be tested to see if their kids had downs or any other of those disorders that can be tested for in-utero and if they have them they should be aborted. Made me so mad!!! He said they will never be productive to society. You know what? Matthew may never hold down a job (although many downs people can hold down jobs... we have a guy at our local supermarket and a guy at a restaurant) but he is DEFINITLY productive in society and let me tell you how. He is never want for a smile. He says hi to everyone. He laughs. He hugs. He is a joy to be around. To me that is more than a lot of people who make money and add to our economy will ever do. I say making people happy is being very productive and I am sad for that man who made those statements because obviously he's never had his life blessed by one of these wonderful people!!!

What a handsome brother you have!

I work with disabled folks with a whole range of disabilities. I have never found one person to be anything less than anyone else in this world. We all have our stations in life and are here for a reason.

I also have 2 cousins who are disabled and I couldn't imagine my life without them. They bring joy and love that no one else could ever bring to my heart.

Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful brother with us! I'm sure he is a treasure!

Im proud of my disabled brother

Like alot of people have said before:
He. Is. So. CUTE. Im proud of my disabled brother

If you don't mind me asking- does he have any specific disorder or syndrome? Or is it just a collection of multple syndromes/disorders?

Sorry if it seems like a weird question, I just get really curious when I see other people with disabilities (most of the time I just feel too shy to ask the person or their caregivers because it seems like it could be taken as a really rude question)

But yes.
My life seems uninspired lately.
Nobody has really made me proud because my life is going at a rather dull hum right now- without much change to it...you know? I'm kinda proud of myself though because I memorized my home phone number during the summer (I have a really hard time memorizing names and number patterns like lock combinations or phone numbers)

I am also proud of my little cousin- Corey.
No one is quite sure what is wrong with his vision.
Many experts and universities are still trying to figue it out.
They describe it as looking through one of those sequence tubes, or a kaleidoscope. You know, how everything looks shattered or smashed together? At some points he can see fine, but then the next minute he'll bump into something because he didn't see it. I sometimes see him in school (because the way out school is set up the elementary school and highschool share the same building) walking around with aid and his stick.

My dad told me about this one time when he was in sunday school:

Corey: *bumps into something*
Kid: What are you? Blind?
Corey: Yup!
Kid: If you're blind then where's your stick?!
Corey: Oh well, I left it hat home tonight but I can bring it in if you wanna see it Im proud of my disabled brother

I swear he's such a good kid (okay, so he is REALLY hyper, but that's normal for a boy his age) and I can't imagine having to go though what he has to in his every day life. He always seems positive about it too, I guess because it's normal to him his condition really doesn't frustrate or depress him at all, even if people can be rude to him or stare and wonder why at the age of six he has to wear special glasses and walk around with a cane and use a special lamp at his desk to do work at school.

Kaika your post was fantastic.I am also very proud of you.
((((hugs for Corey))))
I have something called intracranial hypertension
its a very big name I know.
It made me bump into things
my sight was affected where I would see like bubbles or
something falling thru the air
they found out it was from too much fluid in my brain
there is a site online that explains it if you google BIH.
...warm wishes to you both..Jjulia

((((((((julia and brother)))))) i just want you to know your post has really touched my heart. so many times in this society people that are disabled or different in any way are tucked away and shunned.

as for me, i am proud of YOU. what a wonderful sister you are! and how beautiful it is to see the love you have for your brother.

i have to share something with you in terms of living with disabilities. when i was born, i had problems. birth defects. docs told my mom that it would be a good idea to have me institutionalized for my whole life, since they thought i was going to be mentally retarded. my mom thought of this whole thing and decided, no and that she's going to raise me because no one knows what happens in a child's future. it turned out to be a great decision for my mom. even with the difficulties of my profound deafness, i learned how to speak and do other things that regular kids could do. the only think i couldn't do was hear! my mother didn't hide me or anything. she encouraged me to tackle the world. she was and is my link to the outside world, filling in when i couldn't understand or hear what other people are saying. i treasure my mother for her courage and encouragement.

Recluse thanks for your warm wishes.

Wicked wings.I am so proud of your mum.I understand how mums
fought to keep their disabled children.((((hugs & Im proud of my disabled brother)))) for all
the mums who love their children...
One thing that happened when we were kids in the 60's
were other kids used to poke fun at disabled kids...How ignorant.
so keep being proud of your families all you out there....

kind thoughts to all Jjulia

I just wanted to share that my mum
went into hospital for a day recently
and my brother(see pic) cried with
his head in his hands. I didn't see it
but my daughter did and it touched
her heart. My mum is sort of ok.
but I know my brother will be
devastated if anything happens to her.
me too.
luv...Jjulia
