i know this worked for me while in a dibillitating depression. i just had to let it run it's course. i couldn't really do much cause i had a truck on my chest. what i tried and it did help was watch america's funniest videos. for that hour each day in spite of my depression i guffawed thru the program. if nothing else it gave my troubled mind a rest.

I definitely affirm the importance of humor in people's lives! I just got two DVD's of the old comedy show with Red Skelton, and am planning on watching them soon.

I totally agree with laughter being some of the best medicine around.
I love America's Funniest Videos. The man I caretake for and I sit down every Sunday night and watch it together. It breaks any tension there may be in the house (he has some anger issues at times) and we just get a good belly laugh together. I notice he sleeps better that night when he's had a chance to laugh too. ![]() Red Skelton! Oh my gosh, I loved him back in the day. I loved that he could be all these wacky people that he portrayed and the feeling of warmth and grandfatherly love he seemed to have when signing off the show. He was a true "gentle"man and very talented too! I loved his smile and giggle ![]() |

He is an example to us of someone who suffered a great loss in his life (the death of a young son), but dealt with such sadness by laughter. I always thought it was funny when he couldn't help laughing at himself. Remember the two seagulls and the funny things he had them saying? Gertrude and Heathcliff?

Yes, he did suffer a big loss and met it head on.
I think Gertrude and Heathcliff were my favs! I loved how he mussed his hair, messed with his hat and put his hands under his arms, flapping them as he was flying....and his lisp that he used....LOL....putting a smile on my face just remembering ![]() I'll end this post with his famous last words on all his shows: "God Bless" |

Yes!! Red Skelton was hilarious! I think it was a daughter of his who died young - she jumped out a window while tripping on LSD. Very sad . . . but Red kept on entertaining. Laughing is such an important part of life.

Don't they say..........Laughter is the best medicine! You all are bringing back good memories when Grandma came to visit she had to watch The Jack Benny Show, Red Skelton, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and the 1a2a3a guy? Oh it just came to me, Lawrence Welk Show. Thanks for the memories!
