I'm starting to get a little freaked out about finding a job before my employment insurance runs out mid Feb. so I've really broadened my job search to include looking everywhere possible.

So last week I started applying to a few jobs advertised on Kijji. Since this is the modern equivalent of answering a newspaper ad 20 years ago, I figured my chance of a response was slim, but it didn't cost me anything to apply so I figure it was worth it.

Today I got an e-mail from the recruiting agency that placed the ad saying that they felt I was qualified for the position, and that they wanted to present me to their client.

The catch is the interview & how I'll be presented to the client. Since they say they're a "Global" company they only do video interviews. So I need a web-cam and Skype. Fortunately my computer has a web-cam on it, although I haven't a clue as to how to use it, and they thoughtfully provided a link to where I can get a Skype account. So now I just have to figure it out - fast.

I'm feeling very nostalgic for job hunting 20 years ago. Honestly it was easier.

Skype is really easy. My son showed me how to download it.

Good luck on the job.

I remember when they were still separated into "Help Wanted - Male" and "Help Wanted - Female".

I agree splitimage job searching is a whole lot different than it was 20-30 years ago. It's not funny but half my employers are retired or dead. And I was making triple the money in the 80"s. and was able to buy food. ha! Good luck with your searching! I may be out there hitting the pavement again soon.

That is weird. You could interview in pajama pants and slippers and they wouldnt know difference. They'll only see top half. :-)

wishing you good fortune on your job hunt, SI. it's a great idea to broaden your search in these difficult times. my sister applied for a job online, got hired and it's a super job. so good things can happen tho many of us find this new way of obtaining work has certainly changed. i long for the old days of seeking too.

Talk about a win-win situation: EITHER you'll have a new job, OR you'll have two brand-new skills! --a reward for your facing a challenge with a "now I just have to figure it out" attitude.

Personally, I'm sending "job" vibes your way ...

It sure was easier 20 yrs ago. Didn't get the same kind of exposure though. Kids don't believe me when I say I would limit a job search to a bus route. I did!

LOL roadrunner.

I remember one summer, after 2'nd year university, I needed a summer job. My Dad was being really suppportive & encouraging, and telling me not to be discouraged if I didn't find something immediately. I applied to a couple of jobs in the paper, then decided to hit the pavement with my resume, so I went to this street in Ottawa that's pedestrian only and has a ton of tiny shops and restaurants on it. I was in a payphone booth, calling home to see if there'd been any messages for me, and then I planned to walk up one side of the street and back on the other stopping in everywhere to see if they needed help. The first restaurant I went to had a help wanted sign in the window, so I went in, happenned to catch the head chef at a good time, and got a job as a line cook on the spot. I'd worked as a cook the previous summer too. It was my first day looking. Later that afternoon when I got home, I got a phone call offering me another job. Sure wish it was like that now.

But I sucessfully downloaded Skype and confirmed that my web-cam works. And it seems pretty straightforward.

One of my friends has agreed to do a practice run with me tomorrow, just so that I can make sure my speakers / mic are ok.

And I have the interview at 2:00 pm on thurs.

Nervous and psyched at same time.

Sending tons of good vibes and karma your way!

And I agree with roadrunner - you will definitely gain some new skills that are being used more frequently in the business world today.

That's great. When I was looking for work many years ago and nervous about everything, I would do a 'drive by' just to see how long it took to get to the location!

Times have really changed.

Good luck splitimage.
