Ouch, Ouch, OUCH!!!

So, this is just me being winey and I apologize, but I don't really have anyone to hear me wine....

I had a cavity in one of my front teeth. It didn't bother me a bit other than mild sensitivity to cold things. I went to the Dentist and my Dentist said I needed a root canal. I was terrified and had, up until this week, been able to avoid ever getting one. Well...I had the RC on Tuesday morning and it went much better than I thought it would. There was minimal discomfort during the procedure and afterwards the only pain I had was some aching from where the numbing meds were injected. I had a temp filling placed on the tooth and am going back in the morning for a crown.

So....why am I wining? Since yesterday night, I have developed shooting pain going all the way up my jaw and the tooth is now throbbing!! I have been tolerating the pain fairly well, but it's getting worse now and I'm getting more and more grumpy and irritable. The temp filling is starting to disintegrate and there's a small hole forming at the base of the tooth.

My head hurts so bad...I want to cry. Tylenol only lasts an hour or so. I have left over Narcotics from a past surgery and I want to take them so bad, but I keep telling myself I shouldn't. I guess I'm just needing for someone to hear that I am hurting.

Do you ever feel sick or painful and just want your Mommy....or want someone to comfort you? That's what I feel like right now. I just hurt....and wish it would stop or that I had someone to help make me feel better.

I'm going to try and hold out till the morning for my appt....but I might end up taking a dose of my old narcotics. This pain is just getting out of hand.

If you read all this....thank you for listening to me wine...

(((((((((Ely))))))))))))

Take the drugs as long as they aren't on board for your dentist appointment. You wouldn't want to mask the pain with him/her. Get a good night's rest and know that I love you.

Oh God...I remember my root canal. The procedure itself is long but virtually painless, it's the after effects that are horrendous. I was given a pretty high dosage of vicodin to help with the pain, but all it did dull it slightly and knock me out...

If I were you, I would take the pills (assuming you don't have a previous history of drug/narcotics abuse). There's no need in making yourself suffer any more than you have to, and they shouldn't go to waste anyway. Good luck with your appointment!

(((Elysium))) It's an excruciating pain, so whine all you want. If you can get some Anbesol (or teething ointment), it might help to reduce the pain....a bit/maybe. You can dab it around the gums near the tooth, and it will (temporarily) numb the area/relieve the pain. You can't put anything directly on that nerve though. Hope you're feeling better soon.

How'd it go; did the dentist make it all better? I hope you didn't develop an abscess or infection or something.

Well....I ended up taking the pain meds last night and I'm glad I did. They took my pain level down from a 7 to a 3 and I was able to get some sleep.

This morning I spent about 4 hours in the Dentist's chair!! My Dentist wanted to re-inspect the tooth because of the late onset of symptoms. Her diagnosis was acute trigeminal neuralgia. She said it sounds like the procedure caused enough swelling that it has irritated the cranio-facial nerves....which I agree with. Even brushing my hand across that side of my face causes pains right now. Unfortunately, this may take a couple weeks to heal, especially since we are not quite done with the dental work yet. The good news is that there's no abscess.

This Dentist is great though. She gave me a prescription for antibiotics, just in case I start noticing signs/symptoms of infection over the holiday weekend, so I can fill it if I need to.

So today I ended getting the temp filling removed, the tooth probed, I got fitted for the perm crown and had the temp crown placed. My Dentist said since I was already going to have pain, and since I had the pain meds available that it was my decision if I wanted to do any more work today on my teeth or not. I said "why not?"....it's true...I'm already hurting...I might as well get as much done now since I have the pain meds. I ended up getting six fillings on top of everything else.

What's got me really scared.....I wanted to get those invisalign things.....the clear mouthpieces that are like braces....but my Dentist said that my bite is so bad that I am not a candidate. She said that I need a referral to an Oral Surgeon. She said that I need braces, but before I can get braces, I need surgery on my jaw....which requires having my jaw wired shut for a few days. Totally freaking over this!!

At least my Dentist has a sense of humor. She had to do a gingivectomy on my RC tooth today as well, and after she did that, we had a little conversation that went like this....

(ME) "What is that taste of burnt nuts in my mouth?"
(Dentist-with reserved chuckle) "Uh...cauterized gingiva."
(Me) "Wow....cauterized gingiva tastes delicious!!"
(Dentist) ":-o"
(Me-singing) "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...."
(Dentist) Loud burst of laughter

Oy...I think I'm gonna go lay down for a while. My head feels like it wants to explode.

I'm glad to hear the pain meds helped! It sucks to hear about the braces and jaw surgery, though. If it's not one thing it's another, right?!

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire....?
You're the one with the sense of humor! Who wouldn't laugh? You're funny!

Really sorry you're going through all this though. Personally I think you ought to be getting a lot more than just cheese with your wine.

I had to google acute trigeminal neuralgia, lol. Great that you could have so much dental work done, despite the tremendous pain.

I was so completely numb...the only things I felt were cold nerve zaps when the Dentist was drilling on the root canal tooth and spraying water and air on it....otherwise the local anesthetic took care of most of it.

Now that that has all worn off, it is a totally different story. It's back to using the Lortab for tonight. The really cool thing is the Lortab makes me feel queezy.

Hmmmm.....pain, or nausea.....?

I hate them both!!

If you let the dentist know that the Lortab makes you nauseas, she might have another pain med she can prescribe.
