Hi all
I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to keep snakes out of my Chciken coupe and avery...
I have used wire with small openings but the smaller snakes are still getting in...Luckily I haven't lost any birds this time.

I caught the Carpet snake and relocated him on the other side of the hill...safer for him and my birds..

Cheers

Have you thought about clear perspex around the bottom? Like a foot high? Our neighbours did this and it helped them

We have browns and red bellied blacks around here *shudder*
Thanks for this!

I will look into that...thanks

We have the eastern browns, and tigers but they seem to leave the birds alone. it's the carpet snakes that like my birds...but at least their easy going... those brown and red belly snakes have terible tempers...lol

Thanks again

They also have a fox terrier which helps keep them away too. Which is great for us. Our Himalayan cat was killed by a brown in April

Whichever is cheaper and/or aesethically better for you, ideally sheet metal or acrylic/perspex/plexiglass for durability and long term, but can use sheets of wood as well, placed at least 2-3 inches into the ground and a foot and half up is what the agricultural dept recommended here at one point when I had a problem with snakes going after the coup and pen. It took care of the problem. To also make sure any holes and crevices are sealed off for the coup in floor boards and by posts, if the coup is not surrounded by fence. My neighbor had a problem with this, as it was a raised coup and they would climb the posts to get in.

You could get a couple peafowl; they eat snakes! (In the wild this includes cobras!)
Thanks for this!

Dear flooded, Fresia, Umbral_Seraph,
Thanks for you replies....

Flooded - I have three little dogs and I worry for them too because they would most likely have a go if they came across a snake....They are not very fast or nimble..Unlike foxies they can be so fast...

Fresia I am going to talk to someone about both your and Flooded suggestions and see which will be the best for my place...thanks I had a really large Carpet snake sitting on my kitchen's window sill trying to get to my Pet Corella inside....I was shocked because the snake had climbed several meters up the wall..... 8)

Umbral_Seraph I think your idea of peafowl is a cool idea but my nieghbours wouldn't ...lol I love peacock's I wish I was back on the farm so I could have some...

Thanks again

So guinea fowl wouldn't be accepted by neighbors either? I want some but you get them the day after they hatch here and I don't have the warming lights and all that.
