I got a phone call today from the police to say that my son had his Ipod stolen from him on his way to school this morning I am in shock, The police said the lad that done this had done it to 4 other kids too on the same morning and have caught him which is good and have him in police custody, My son gave a statement and said that he was threatened with a knife if he didn't hand his Ipod over. So so upset and I am so glad that my son is safe.

So sorry to hear this happened to him. It is just so ridiculous. Here in Dallas a couple of months ago, a 19-year-old young man got off a train only to be attacked by a group of kids who were only about middle school age. The were after his Ipod. They pushed him down onto the tracks and he was dragged 30 yards by the train and died. Just stupid, ridiculous, senseless violence.

Here's a link to the story:

((Buttercup)) - so sorry to hear this happened to your son and how upsetting this is for you. Good for your son in giving it up so he didn't get hurt and luckily they caught this young person. How old is your son and the robber?

I heard on the news - in Detroit a young man was robbed and killed for very expensive athletic shoes ad another for his designer glasses. My 14 yr old has an IPod and we just got my 10 yr old one but I won't let my younger one take it to school.

Thanks everyone...

Lynn my son has just turned 16 and my son thinks the attacker is about 19 years old, He seem's ok but the thought of him being threatened with a knife is scary, I guess he is lucky that he was unharmed, The police are meant to be calling back with news on this thug as they think there is a chance that my son will get his Ipod back, I do tell him not to take it to school but he won't listen, I think because his friends do it he does it too.

Yes its very scary ((Buttercup)) - it would be very traumatizing to have a knife pulled on you. My 14 yr old takes hers to school because it helps her organize her homework and they allow them to listen to music at certain times. I would think as a parent, any 16 yr old should be able to take valuables to school without fear of being robbed. I won't let my 10 yr old take hers because there's no use for it in elementary school. I'm very sorry this happened to your son and from a mom's viewpoint this is so upsetting.

I agree Lynn, My daughter who is 13 she often asks can she take hers to school but I won't let her as she is to vulnerable were my son is different, He said he was actually going to fight this lad but when he seen he had a knife he didn't argue with him.Scary stuff, I am so grateful that he is ok as you hear of so many people being killed for the sake of phones, Ipods etc...A lad by me was knifed to death at the age of just 21 for just £50 so it is rumoured late last year. This is 10 minute walk. Got the lad who done it.

That is awful that someone has the idea to go and steal A Material object and yet to boot with a damn weapon; meaning intent to harm another if they do not give it up. some things in this world just make no sense to me.

I am so glad to read that your son is ok- I am also glad that you try best to protect both your son and daughter.

I wish the world was not like this; it is so sad to hear things of this sort.... I keep wondering in my head how can a person do such a thing- and for what- a material object- I get it; Ipods and what not cost a lot of money and people can sell them; but really at the risk of hurting another to do it this way and not a more honest way.

I am sorry this has happened; but keep thanking the stars above that everyone is ok. A person is not replaceable

Hugs to you! So glad your son was not harmed, I bet you were frightened terribly when you got that phone call, It would have scared me to death! I know when my kids were in school it was their calculators and even their jackets that were stolen out of their lockers, but robbed a knife point just makes me sick!

Thank you all.

Police called last night and said that they charged him with 3 counts of robbery 1 attempted robbery and assault and that he kept saying "no comment", They said they he would appear in court in today and they would call me back today.

Just called me half hour a go and said he will be remanded in custody until the trial which will be awhile yet.My son might have to give evidence depending on if this boy pleading guilty or not.

EDIT: Police said the judge was disgusted with him.

That's great news the young man was caught. I hope your son will get back his IPod. At least he won't be able to do this again and hopefully he'll get help so he won't re-offend in the future. It's feels worse when you're robbed and the person's never found...which makes the victim more afraid.

This is why we need to teach our children that if someone approaches them, just hand the stuff over - whether it is their ipod, laptop, or even their parents car. Better they hand it over and chase them later than to try and fight someone who may have a gun.

My best wishes, I hope that both your son AND the boy who chose to do this get through this - although I don't have much faith in the justice system, sometimes they DO help young people to become better folks.
Thanks for this!

so sorry this happened to your son
I'm glad he wasn't injured.

It sure scares the *#*# out of ya, doesn't it?

a couple years ago my son was held up, at gunpoint, while he was pumping some gas. My son gave the guy his birthday money he had just gotten the day before for his 18th birthday. (talk about jarring.. flashbacks abounded as I was right back at 8 years old with a gun to my back... ugh)

I hope your son is going to be OK and that it didn't upset him too bad

I hope you-- mom, are doing OK too.

you're both in my heart,
fins

oops, my bad, I didn't see your most recent post.

seems it did affect your son a bit-- I hope you and your husband can help him to realize that this is a VERY rare thing that happened to him. If he's too affected by it maybe a couple sessions with a T. would be of great help.

((Buttercup and Son)) - I'm sorry your son is having a hard time and its easy to understand why. When a crime first happens, the victim gets this rush of adrenaline and they don't get the full affect until later. I had 2 men break into my house while I was at home - lucky for me it ended well. I ended up attending a victims of crime group and this helped a bit.

Its natural for your son to re-think this robbery and imagine the worst - like what if the guy did use the knife? It took me at least 6 months before I was more calm - I was constantly on edge in my home. Ask if they have a crime support group or as Purple Fins said, a few sessions with a counselor. It must also be nerve wracking for you too, as mothers we absorb our kids stress.
