"While we’re all aware that some popular cereals contain whopping amounts of sugar, a new report by the Environmental Working Group reviewed 84 popular brands, and revealed some eye-popping comparisons of the sugar content with some popular cookies and snack cakes."

I've been a label reader for years. Occasionally I will buy some with sugar for my girls plus most people will add their own sugar. I agree most of them are junky and don't have any fiber. Personally I love my Shredded Wheat biscuits - these are whole wheat with 6 grms of fibre, 0 salt and sugar. I put a little boiled water to soften the biscuits and then drain the water ...add 1% milk.

I used to put sugar on breakfast cereal when I was a child, but now I prefer the ones that are more basic, without a lot of sugar baked into them. They just taste better to me that way!

Funny how age changes tastes, when I was young I looked at how sweet a cereal was, now I check the fiber count, a sure sign of middle age.

Fiber One and Kellogs have recently introduced some very tasty high fiber cereals.

When my children we small, I told them they could have any cereal they wanted as long as it had under X grams of sugar per serving (I forget the exact amount). They would read the labels and they really enjoyed picking out their cereal. They accepted that the sugary brands weren't an option.

As far as tastes changing, I have to admit I still love cocoa puffs and crispies.

I used to like Twinkies a lot. Not for breakfast, though!

cocoa crispies = chocolate milk for breakfast. it's a good thing. & i'll admit sometimes tony the tiger shares a bowl with me...

oh did you know you can get a special box made up with you & tony the tiger on the front????

just saying...it's expensive..like $25 if i had the extra money & a life i would so do this...because it's just cool...all my friends kids aren't allowed to eat them so they're no fun..i can't even get it for them...so that leaves me...& i can't really justify it but it is just so cool...if i just had the extra $$$$....

just saying....
Thanks for this!

I am limited in what cereals I am able to eat since I can't eat gluten. My choices are the ones on the gluten free aisle and pay out my hiney for them or eat Chex. I don't like the plain chex because they have no flavor imo. So I have tried the flavored ones and I like the chocolate one but can't find it anymore. So I was buying the Cinnamon one but the other day when we were at Walmart I saw that Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles are gluten free now so I can have those and I love Fruity Pebbles so I get blah no flavor cereal or sugary cereal.

I like the cereal with the mama and baby gorilla on the cover. they are like corn pops. I used to get it when I was living with my mom, I would show her the box and yell, "gwaaammmy!" and she would get all insulted.

I go by the health "rule" that a breakfast cereal should have less than or equal to 5 grams of sugar and more than or equal to 5 of fiber. Getting one's personal taste/preferences in there isn't easy but the experimenting is fun

I eat Kellogg's All Bran Complete Wheat Flakes. The flakes are larger than normal and the cereal is sort of sweet and sort of savory so I sometimes just do a small bowl of them without milk and eat them like chips, one at a time.

Some breakfast cereal servings have more sugar than a Twinkie

Is breakfast cereal all that nutritious? The milk and maybe the fiber seem to be the best parts. Most cereals are low in protein and hign in simple carbohydrates. Breakfast is too important a meal for only cereal though I do hold hot oatmeal in high esteem because it provides a lot of energy and is very filling. In the morning, the body does better with protein from eggs and other sources. Leave the cereal to snack time.

We need carbohydrates. http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritio...carbohydrates/ A good cereal uses whole grains and they are not simple.

I add raisins to my cereal, sometimes a banana or other fruit. The amount of protein is fine, as long as you eat some protein with each meal, that's great. Sometimes for breakfast I eat an apple dipped in peanut butter.

I think if there's that much sugar in a product, one knows it and I kind of doubt people eating those things (Hershey bars? :-) read the ingredient label to check the nutrition? LOL

Fiber one recently started introducing an 80 calorie per serving line. I tried one out and found it rather tasty. As it is Fiber One the fiber count is high, and it is relatively low in carbs and sugar.
