I tried posting on another site but I got no answers. I am looking at retro vintage 50s swimwear and they start at $75 (one piece or bikini). They are beautiful swimsuits and I would definitely stand out from other bathers, but I am wondering if it's worth the money? Aren't most bikinis $30 top and $30 bottom? Does it sound reasonable?

It really doesn't sound like a big deal if you are talking $75 instead of $60, but if we are comparing $150 with $60 then I'd hope that the vintage suit fits really well and that you are planning to spend many hours in it. I thought I saw something about $20 for the bikini pieces and it sounded like it was supposed to be an exceptionally good deal so $30 is probably more typical, like you said.

One piece swim suits are typically more as there is more fabric and typically there can be more structure to the upper torso for support, which is what makes them more expensive than a two piece. If you want a different look and depending on how much going to use it, could very well be worth the price. Most the one pieces I have found, that have been made well, have been around $65-100 unfortunately.

So it sounds like the price sounds reasonable...

I'll show you some of the swimsuits I'm looking at. I want something that screams 50s and patriotic.

This is my favorite two piece, but I would prefer a one piece: http://www.unique-vintage.com/retro-...it-p-7201.html

An alternative two piece: http://www.unique-vintage.com/black-...t-p-15513.html

Patriotic one piece: http://www.unique-vintage.com/retro-...it-p-7202.html

This is probably my favorite, not sure if it screams 50s though: http://www.modcloth.com/shop/onepiec...ece-in-emerald

Not sure if this one will look good with my skin tone: http://retrovintagedresses.com/toile...by-barrie.html

Great suits. I noticed too that there are limited sizes available in some of the designs; check back to make sure the ones you want are still available.

The styles are very similar comparing the two two-pieces, so it is a matter of color/detail. If still wanting a one piece, both look like they are really nicely cut suits for the figure. I know you said you loved the emerald one, which is a gorgeous color very and very classic styling for the time period. Then again you really wanted patriotic, which also is so retro. Which one(s) are you leaning towards now?

they are cute, especially the patriotic ones.

Is it worth it? I think if you can afford it and will not wreck your finances, that why not?

I just picked up an awesome reto swimsuit for...... .25 cents. That was a pretty good find mind you. And it is vintage. These are new replicas so I can understand the pricing. Swimsuits here, just your average run of the line ones go for anywhere between 40 to well over 100 $. I'm in Canada and the prices may be a bit higher here. Sounds like a reasonable price for something different to me.

Personally I like the emerald one and the toille ones best.

How do you find ANYTHING like that for 25 cents!?!?!?!?!? Yard sale? Salvation army? Yes, I know that would be incredibly hard to find, especially if it fits. That's like a one in a million find!

Hm...now I want to go to goodwill, but even they don't sell clothes for that cheap. But I'm pretty sure they sell swim suits

Small town thrift stores, it's one of my hobbies. Small town thrift stores are almost always cheaper than in big cities. And ya, doesn't feel great to know you nearly got it for free!! That sends me through the roof. Plus the smaller thrift stores usually have some pretty cool stuff, they are less picked over than the bigger more popular ones. It was crazy that it was my size, I'm about a zero, women back then were usually more curvy than I am.

I would just get a tank suit, like we use to wear to swim team :-) and call it a day? I don't know how anyone would tell a "50's" one piece from a new one, especially in a solid color, the newer fabrics and fading/chemical resistant stuff would definitely make it worth buying a newer one for me: http://www.swimsuitsforall.com/tank-swimsuits#back

That's super cool. My friends enjoy going to thrift stores, so I'll ask around. Not sure if Goodwill will ever have prices that low, but at least I know they will have vintage swim suits at half the price and I heard there are some good stores close to where I live.

Now all I need is money! xD

It's true that they do look the same, I mean, I would have to ask my grandparents to see if they can tell the difference...but they cost about the same so I would lean towards the vintage look. I guess if I REALLY wanted the vintage look, I would go with the two-piece because the bottoms totally scream 50s.

This one is my fave because it's patriotic, but I can't decide which one I should get: http://www.unique-vintage.com/retro-...it-p-7201.html

I like this one alot too, but I'm not sure which one would look better on me: http://www.unique-vintage.com/black-...t-p-15513.html

If you want to check out. Not everyone's taste but I think it's kinda classy and it's me forsure. Doesn't look as good sprawled on a bed as it does on.

Those last two are both super cute, flirty and classic. I couldn't pull them off because of my skin tone and hair color, but if you can that's awesome!

The green one piece is classy...kind of a Grace Kelly thing. I don't get the patriotic thing but to each his/her own.
+1 for thrift stores but a bathing suit lasting 50 years is amazing.
I really like the convenience and price of an old pair of cutoffs and removing the tshirt but I guess you don't have that option or inclination
Okay I'm done, just thought I'd add a male view

It actually has no wear or tear, and the fabric does not look or feel like it is deteriorating.

I don't get the patriotic thing either, but I think it's because I am Canadian, and red and white are not my thing, maple leafs um I dunno.

Well the 50s was a very patriotic time and the swim suit goes with the era

Yes that is what i think of with the green suit, it is probably my favorite, but I keep changing my mind.

Oh wow, that's a very nice bathing suit! Great deal!

Yeah, "flirty and classic" is what I'm going for, but I am wondering if it would go with my skin tone, I think the red and black might be better, but I LOVE the blue bottoms!
