I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out, and my appointment is May 31. None of my teeth are impacted which is good, but one is a bit angled and one is only about halfway through and then one they told me that they would probably have to cut some of the bone to get out. Fun, right?

Who has their wisdom teeth? What about who has gotten them taken out? I'm a little worried, but not too worried. My sister just got her out and it sucked a lot for her, but all four of hers were impacted so the oral surgeon told me my experience would be a lot easier.

Any stories or advice for when I get them out?

I had mine but I lost one last week. There was an abscess/infection and after 3 weeks of pain I was happy to let it go. Mine was a very simple extraction. Good luck.

Thanks. I hope everything goes well. I'm getting put under because there's no way I want to be at all awake during the procedure!

I have no fear of needles and as I said, I'm being put under so there's gonna be an IV in my arm and everything and I'm 100% fine with that! I just want to get the surgery done and over with!

I was lucky in that none were impacted or abscessed but had gotten to the point like you in that it was time for them to come out. I was out for the procedure under IV anaesthetic and it wasn't too bad afterward, ached but the meds helped with that to a fairly tolerable level. I do remember them saying specifically and definitely not to use a straw to drink afterward which can cause problems like dry socket, which I understand is not only painful but is harder to heal. They should give you the instructions to go over beforehand so you can prepare ahead of time with foods that are appropriate to have, if you don' t already have some the information. Some of the instructions they will give you before the procedure on how to take care afterward.

Wishing you well for your procedure and speedy recovery!

I had a wisdom tooth removed and it was a breeze. But it was not normal. It was angled and had a very small root and when the dentist showed me the xray I said, go for it, this one will probably be the quickest extraction you've ever done and it was out in a few seconds.

Yours sounds more complicated than mine but I hope it will be easy on you since they are sedating you.

I had one of mine pulled about two weeks ago. I still have the other three. It took about two minutes, if that long, and it was over. For me the worst part was the bleeding afterwards, I just can't stand the taste of blood. And now there's still a hole in my gums (my husband said it takes a loooong time for those to close up) and I constantly get food stuck in there.
But all in all, it was no big deal.

Good luck, I hope yours goes just as smoothly.

I have kind of a funny story about my teeth!...while there really is nothing at all fun about tooth pain of any kind..I wanted to be put under when I went for surgery, but couldn't afford it. So they gave me a prescription for 4 valum...I was supposed to take one 2 at most before the surgery..which I did. When my name was called I stood up to walk and fell straight on my face...didn't feel a thing just jumped right up and went in. Now I am a great big baby when it comes to any kind of doctor so I was all good until I sat in the chair and my anxiety took over...overriding the two valume I had previously taken....so I snuck in my purse and got another.....well, needless to say I do not remember the surgery and nearly took a flying leap over the banister at home.....so word to the wise if they offer you sedatives and you have anxiety make sure they are in someone else's hands during the procedure..LOL!!..and good luck to you!

I had all 4 of mine out when I was 16 and it was a major deal because all 4 were impacted. I was put out under a general anesthetic, and had to have my gums stitched up afterwards which was a really odd sensation. i got a bit sick from the anasthetic, and my face was swollen and bruised for about 10 days afterwards. They also gave me a syringe, that I had to use after every meal to rinse out the spots where the wisdom teeth had been. But like I said, mine were a really bad case. I hope you have a much easier time.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. I'm a bit nervous but I'm sure it'll be fine. The surgeon told me the procedure will take about an hour, but I'm gonna be knocked out so that's good.

Yeah SingDanceRunLife I feel the same way, I'm sure it will be fine.

In 2006 I had all 4 of mine taken out at the same time. They put me under so I didn't feel anything. I dunno how long it took but since I was knocked out, it seemed quick. After that I had to spend a lot of time in bed, and avoided solid foods. It was kinda fun.

Yeah they gave me a syringe for that too. They told me to use a mixture of water and mouthwash for that. Eventually the holes closed up, I didn't get any stitches. It took a long time (maybe a few months) to get used to the extra space, but that's not really annoying. I'm glad I had them taken out.

I had to have all 4 of mine taken out 3-4 years ago. I happen to have a narrow jawline, so there wasn't any space for the wisdom teeth, and they were kind of stuck... maybe the front 1/3 of the crown was sticking through my gums. Getting them taken out wasn't bad, as I was under with an IV, but the aftermath wasn't real fun. I take an abnormally high dosage to go under and come out with alot of difficulty...I remember being sooo nauseous and throwing up what looked like a big puddle of rust! There wasn't much pain after, thank goodness, but it was like a week before I could my jaw to open more than 1/8 inch.

SDRL,

Yours will be no prob, especially if they're not impacted. I'd be surprised if it would even take an hour. Mine were all impacted, one laying on its side. The oral surgeon said in the thirty years of his practice mine were in the top five of most difficult to remove. The anesthetic attempt was a pathetic fail. I was awake for the whole procedure. He had to break up the teeth, grind parts down, and suck them out. One tooth in my lower left jaw he had to be so forceful with I ended up consenting (that's how awake i was, i was able to consent) to two bone grafts to repair the part of the jaw the surgeon destroyed in his attempt to get the tooth out. Then again, I was born with a craneo/facial deformity that was pretty severe, so I expected it to be bad. Most of my dental work is. In any case, if what happened to me was awful, the message is that I survived and so will you. Trust in your surgeon, even google reviews if it will make you feel better. Know that you will ultimately be okay.

I had all four of mine pulled 2 years ago (one side at a time), sounds like they were in a similar position to yours. I chose to be awake when mine were pulled and only needed stitches my gum on one side (they had to cut the gum and clear some bone). It was pain-free and I thought it was pretty interesting.

I'm not looking forward to not being able to eat solid food. Mostly because my town's big annual festival is that weekend and there's so much good food it's insane! I didn't realize the dates until after I scheduled my appointment and honestly, I want these teeth out ASAP so I'm not going to change it. I'll just get smoothies (they have really good smoothies too, not just food), and this is an excuse to get a souvenir cup haha. I'm just hoping I feel well enough to go down to the festival on Saturday (the best day, in my opinion). My surgery is Thursday morning so I'll have Thursday and Friday to rest completely.

Ahhhh wisdom teeth. I never understood the name since I never felt less wise once they were taken out.

Mine were complicated, unfortunately. The bottom 2 came in sideways and were growing into my lower jaw. Those had to be sawed into multiple pieces for removal. Once I was out I was dumb enough to use a straw to drink and that sucked the scabs right off those two lower ones and I ended up with dry sockets. Worst. Pain. Ever. And I've lived with a headache for about 15 years.

To compound the agony of the pain I was going through, the relief just so happened to be flavored like something I despise more than just about any other flavor... cloves. Yeah, they used gauze soaked in some sort of awful clove juice to kill the pain of dry sockets. It worked very well, but the flavor was almost as unbearable as the pain.

Moral of the story? Don't use a straw.

The OP's don't sound anywhere near as complicated so I am sure it will go fine. Good luck tomorrow and let us know how it goes!

It all went well. I don't remember anything from after the IV until I got home and got into my sister's bed because hers is on the main floor and mine is in the basement. My mom gave me my mefs, got me ice packs and I went to sleep. I slept for hours then too until I woke up hungry and had my dad make me a milkshake. Right now I'm in practically no in pain at all, but I think that's because my mom gave me my pain meds. Piece of cake this was, although I've heard the worst of the swelling comes on the second day.

Glad you are getting some relief from the painkillers; I haven't the receptors for them. Feels good to sleep off that IV for sure!
