I was awake most of last night with incredible pain in my jaw. From previous experience I was pretty sure it was an abcess. Got in to see the dentist this afternoon. He was impressed with how swollen my jaw was.

I was right it's an abcess. He did a root canal to drain the gunk out of my jaw. He got all sorts of nastiness out in the office, but it's still swollen like bejeebers. I look like a one cheeked chipmunk! Not to mention he numbed me up REAL good! Tho I thound like I have a lithp when I talk. Trying to figure out how I'm thupothed to eat dinner tonight. Think I'll make thome thoup.

This is pitiful! I'm replying to my own post!

Jeeze louise this *dang* thing HURTS!!!! The dentist told me if it swelled once I got home I should go the the ER and have it drained. It's swollen, but they pressed on it like crazy trying to drain the gunk out at the dentist. I'm thinking it's bruising, not infection. I'll go to ER tomorrow if it doesn't get better.

STOOPID me didn't fill the prescription for the painkiller the dentist gave me. It's codeine based I was afraid I wouldn't wake up for work if I took it tonight. I'm getting that sucker filled tomorrow!!!!

Ugh, abscesses teeth are awful! I assume they gave you an antibiotic, too? Do take the painkillers, you need them the first few days! One thing that has happened to me is, the swelling can push the tooth up and change your bite, causing more pressure on the infected tooth. Ouch!

If its swelling from bruising, cold compresses can help. But definitely go to the ER if it continues. Dental abscesses can cause terrible infections for your whole body. I hope you are feeling better soon! Dental pain is so hard to deal with.

Thanks everyone!

Been putting cold packs on it and the swelling's gone down a little, which makes me think the swelling is from bruising. Dentist was really rooting around in my mouth.

Went to work this morning even though I felt like poo. Had an appointment with a client I didn't want to reschedule. Client didn't bother to show up or call to cancel. grrrrr...

Asked my boss if I could go home. She said to get the heck out of there.

I'm so worn out feeling I didn't have the energy to go to the pharmacy to get the painkiller script filled. I'm making do with ibuprofren.

Gonna spend the afternoon curled up on the sofa babying myself.

Sounds like you do need some TLC, Liz. So sorry. I've never had an abscess, but have had root canals. They are bad enough! Hope you get well soon!

Today i was too, but good that my problem was way smaller than yours. I just had to fix some teeth and that's it.

I'm going to repost this, from 2-1/2 years ago:

Dagwood Sandwich (standard version for comparison):
2 slices whole wheat bread
About 1 oz. Swiss cheese, sliced
1 tomato, sliced
About 1/2 oz. feta cheese
1 generous handful greens (dandelion or romaine)
Dash of salad dressing

Blender version
Blend 2 slices bread with a little milk, pour puddle on one side of large plate.
Blend cheese(s) with a little milk, pour on plate next to first puddle.
Blend tomato with greens, pour on plate next to other puddles.
Eat with spoon, rotating among the puddles.
I seem to remember puddled chicken and even puddled steak (with puddled collard greens) on occasion. My surgeon said the stitches could come out after 2 weeks but it took a little longer for the actual appointment. It was still a bit painful eating normal food even then.
Ice packs have always helped me after major dental procedures (4 wisdom teeth; 1 foolishness tooth; the gum surgery above). The gum surgeon had started me on ibuprofen a week or two before the surgery. I had so little pain or swelling that I didn't take any of the pain pill prescription.

Hope you're starting to feel better, lizardlady. Aren't you on antibiotics if you're recovering from an infection?
Thanks for this!

(((lizardlady))) - so sorry this is happening and I agree with the others about being on an antibiotic. The reason is - this infection can spread into the blood stream and even cause heart problems. Since I used to have dental anxiety, I'm very militant with keeping my teeth healthy, so I don't know what an abscess is like, although I heard its super painful. I did have jaw surgery though because my bite wasn't aligned and I was wired shut for 2 months and had to blend everything lol.

Have soup or soft scrambled eggs and gargle with either warm salt/water or mouth wash and when I had the surgery my doctor told to me to gargle with 3 parts water to 1 part hydrogen peroxide. Rinse several times a day. Your post was humorous the way you wrote with a lisp. I hope this gets better soon.

Thanks again folks!

I am on an antobiotic. Started it last night as soon as I got home. It's probably why I feel so worn out today. Don't know why but I always worse for a couple of days when I start an antibiotic.

Fooze, thanks for the recipe. I don't own a blender. If the not being able to chew lasts more than a couple of days I'll see about borrowing one. Or maybe I can pick one up cheap at Wally World. I've gotta ask - what's a "foolishness tooth?"

Even though I was too tired to wait while they filled the script for te pain killer (or thought I was too tired) I did stop and pick up some soup, yogurt and pudding to feed myself.

Lynn, thanks for the reminder about rinsing with salt water.

Lol. Thanks for the creativity. :P I've not been to the dentist in years! Gawd, I seriously wouldn't want to get teeth yanked out.

Random thing: I keep typing dentits, by accident!

Well, the bad boy broke through my gum last night and is draining - blech!

Tinkerbell, I think the meds are starting to kick in. I think the combination of root canal, meds and home remedies like rinsing with salt water, packing teabag in the area, ice packs etc. are working.

Akuma, I hurt so badly when I saw the dentist Wednesday I wouldn't have cared if he yanked the blasted thing out without numbing me first. I just wanted it to stop hurting! I hear you about not wanting to go to the dentist. On the other hand not going and having a boken tooth taken care of is what got me into the current situation.

I had an extraction done before and I know the pain. I had lost a filling and ignored it which led to the final broken tooth and lots of pain. I am glad it is draining. Lots of hugs to you LL.

Went back to the dentist today so he could finish the root canal and cap the tooth. He was not happy to see I still had some swelling. He even more unhappy when I told him the danged thing still hurt. Turns out the abscess is smaller, but still there. He rooted around working on it, but could finish the job. Spent almost an hour working on it today trying to drain the danged thing. It hurts like an SOB tonight. I'm back to eating mushy food. Went out and bought a blender so I can mush up different foods. I'm tired of yogurt and pudding, not to mention it's not particularly nutritious.

Man this has gotten old.....

actually its good you are eating yogurt because the anti-biotics can throw your system off and the yogurt helps keep it balanced
