Just curious how many people here use keyboard shortcuts more than or instead of the mouse. I need to learn keyboard commands. I once taught myself to play piano chords and scales so I should be able to do it but the mouse is just so damned easy. Not sure if I can force myself to do this.

Depends on what I'm doing.

While I'm browsing on the 'nets, I mostly use the mouse. However, when I'm drawing or playing a game, times where I really do not want to move my cursor away from what I'm doing in order to use a certain command, then I use keyboard hot keys constantly. Especially when I am drawing, I have my own hot keys programmed in that I have memorized and I use constantly.

For some reason, I really hate having to switch my right hand back and forth from keyboard to mouse. For a lot of websites I use Ctrl+B or Ctrl+I for bold and italics, respectively. That what I don't have to pause from my typing to change the font. I really wish that there was a way for me to stay centered on the keyboard all the time!

I don't know much about the keyboard special keys. My cats use them sometimes if I'm away from the computer and leave the keyboard accessible to them.

It also depends on what i am doing. control button for X, V and C, Delete, back space...but on webpages, I use my mouse. It varies from activity to activity.

Thanks for all the comments I also use ctrl + x, c, and v for text editing but that's so simple. I'm about to use a couple of new programs where keyboard is the way to go and there are so many commands to learn. After using the mouse all these years because it's just so easy, it's going to be hard to force myself to learn and use keyboard shortcuts. And unfortunately I don't have forever to do this...when leaning the basics of piano and guitar the future seemed to stretch out endlessly. Now time seems so short and compressed.
I've watched people who really know their way around computing and they use the kb almost exclusively. There must be a good reason for that.
I've just discovered caret browsing which looks to be interesting.

Thanks for the comment but I would not shop that site. It has some of the worst reviews you can find.

I have a laptop and should learn those keyboard commands in case something ever happens to that little silver square I use 100% of the time. What I know about computers would fit on that square pad.......in large writing! Thanks for bringing this up Geogre, something I can learn from home.

Oh god yes. I used to use a laptop to program a car computer. Hated using that square thing. My sister has a great setup w/ her laptop. She got a wireless mouse and keyboard and a 24" monitor. The irony is that her 24" mon cost a lot less than the 19" I bought 6 years ago
mmm guess I should be busy memorizing those commands

I have a wireless mouse, I find it a pain in the neck to use. But I'm intrigued by the idea I can somehow hook my laptop up to a larger monitor and keyboard. I have a terrific larger flat-screen monitor and keyboard that were part of my 1999 work horse computer until it died. I loved it, I can't afford to buy a replacement computer, laptops and ipads are all less than a computer that does what I want-photo work. How does she do that? My laptop is lower end no camera eye, a couple of years old.

How's the memory work going? I haven't started yet.

mouse...no doubt

I only use keyboard shortcuts if cutting and pasting cant be done with the mouse due to difference in programs.

When I'm using MS Word, I use quite a lot of shortcuts beyond copy and paste simply because it's quicker than having to continuously use the touchpad or mouse. I don't know all the shortcuts, so if there's something uncommon then I'll use the touchpad/mouse but otherwise it's shortcuts all the way.

Other programs I don't use shortcuts all that much. For example, if I'm using Eclipse for Java-based codes, then I prefer to use the touchpad. Similarly, if I'm doing statistical analyses using MiniTab or SPSS, then it's pretty much only by the touchpad.

This can be done with all laptops. Some of them have built-in VGA port (blue-ish area with a bunch of small holes) either on the side or back that looks like this. You'll also need a VGA connector, which has a large blue-ish head with a bunch of prongs and usually (if not always) a black cable. If your laptop doesn't have a VGA port, then go to BestBuy or some other computer/tech store and buy one with the cables. Your larger monitor already has a VGA port built-in so don't need to worry about it.

Thank you. I haven't looked at the sides since I bought it. I have three reg square ports for things like flash drives, hooking wireless mice to a telephone connection, one that looks like the telephone but is larger, a lock, a DVD, and a VGA!! I bet if I look in my box where I keep all things electronic and all cords I'm not sure what they are for, I'll have a cable that will fit the VGA! How cool is this. From a mouse or a keyboard to a large super cool monitor.

It's always great when you find cool stuff about your computer! The port that looks larger than a telephone connection is for your ethernet cable. The main purpose of this is cable Internet, but if you're using wireless Internet, then you can ignore it. If you describe how the cords and other electronic gadgets look, or better yet post a picture, then I may be able to tell you what they're used for.
