I did'nt know where to put this.....I may be naive but is it possible to have uniform universal rape law? We may be coming form different cultures, societies, developed or developing or underdeveloped countries, but the aftermath of the rape is the same for every women guilt, self -blame, trauma, stigma and shame . rape is rape irrespective of where we come from.

Here in India, if a women calims that she is raped, she has to undergo medical checkup to ascertain rape, so even if there is no witness(generally there is never one) or proof yu have the doctors verdict.
I don't know how it is in other countries so I was wondering whether is it possilbe to have one law with a stringent punishment for the whole world.

I understand your sentiments, rape is a horrible crime. The problem is that world is made up of soverign nations, each governing over a different set of cultures and morales.

Since no organization has legal authority to make binding laws for all countries, I am afraid no such law will come to pass.

My advice is to campaign and petition for better defined laws with greater protection where you live, and I wish you the best in your activism.
Thanks for this!

Smilehopeandlive, the law you describe would be wonderful, but Tim has a very valid point. No governmental body has jurisdiction over every country in the world. I don't believe the UN has the power to enforce laws within member countries.

The UN serves only as a peacekeeping force and as a general political melting pot. UN troops on the field cannot engaged unless engaged (ie they can only return fire if fired upon). They do have the power to draft agreements among the member nations, but not all countries have to agree. All nations within the UN are still sovereign.

They do, however, have a human rights council, which I would think the issue would be applicable under. However, as I'm aware of it, its focus is on things like ethnic cleansings and things such as Darfur. Rape is, sadly, a major factor in that, and they do hold tribunals to punish those responsible, but I don't think it's quite the level you're thinking of. The sovereignty of member nations essentially trumps the UN.

It's a very noble and sweet idea that I would love to see. However, the UN's hands are pretty much tied there.

This isn't something that currently is in place and it's doubtful whether it would ever be possible, although I certainly agree it would be wonderful. Unfortunately, countries wish to remain on their own, while certain countries have well-known disputes with each other. In fact, having a governing body trying to enforce laws in various countries could easily spark conflict if one country's culture is imposed on another.

While the OP's idea is admirable I've gotta agree with Oxidopasmine. I don't believe it would be possible to get different governing bodies with different cultures to agree on a uniform law. Heck, people here in the US can't agree what rape is. Witness the boneheaded politician's comment about "legitimate" rape.
