I've found a temporary daily release from the stresses of life, Swimming. I swim very intense and I'm in great shape from it, I've been doing this for the past 8 months just about every day possible for me to be swimming

Does anyone else have anything else they use to distract themselves from depression? Also feel free to comment about the swimming!

Not swimming but I know of it's benefits and exercise is a proven respite from depression in any form if juggled into a schedule regularly.

I was into stretching and calisthenics for quite some time...usually on and off. I'm off right now...since Sept. Bummer. Still do a little but not the 45 minutes minimum I was doing. Would like to try yoga...not the easier stuff but perhaps the more advanced. I'm pretty flexible right now. And more aerobic stuff...even walking. Plan to start that again soon. I do Zumba dance classes! I shy away when I am in a funk for about a week but I go back, it is great to learn new things and have a reason to get dressed and out with the family etc. Great thread.

I need to take up some kind of exercise program. I'd love to learn to swim (although I'm not too keen on it with winter coming up...more of a summer interest).

I don't know much about Zumba, but it looks fast-paced and like wild dancing, so that should be great for keeping in shape.

What was really good about it for me Maven, was that it was geared towards beginners, which was a relief to my non-dancing azz lol so it was easy to learn day by day. It reminded me of P.E. class, you watch the teacher and just copy little by little what they do. If someone judges your big headed clumsiness...so what? Are they your provider in any way? Screw them judgers and learn to dance like I am! It has been a wonderful thing in my life and I hope to get better at it. I have lost a little weight and my self esteem has increased. My kids are even proud of my new-found skillz! Which is saying alot cause they ain't impressed by no Hannah Montana no more lol. Try it, or something similar, I would highly recommend this to a friend. Yours truly, Lightbulb7

that's great you swim, apple jazz.

how many lengths can you do now- or do you just swim for fun.. not actually count the lengths.

music and tv are my main releases, and these forums of course!

I swam on swim team in Jr. & Sr. High ... 500M Freestyle ... I remember how well I slept after practice and competition ... Good Stuff ... !!!

fantastic Applejazz, I can see exactly how swimming helps you, as i also use swimming as a form of distraction and stress release . it is great that you can go most days, i have to have someone with me so only manage it once in a blue moon these days

I like to go for long walks with my dog, she's young and will walk forever without getting tired which is great.
During hot weather me and my friends at college like to play games of soccer or pass around a rugby ball in the green area between classes, but that's only really a Summer thing.
I've never been a swimmer myself, in fact I'm the only person I know who can't swim.
