Those of you who live in the city will probably have little sympathy. Those who live in the country will understand.

I have neighbors who've started celebrating the New Year's holiday this morning. They started with loud music about 10AM today. Even in the house with the windows closed I can still hear the music! I know from past experience this will continue until after the midnight celebration.

OK, here's the part city folks will probably not understand. These people live a quarter mile away! AND I CAN STILL HEAR THEIR %*^^&()_) MUSIC!!! Ain't no point in calling the police. Have tried that in the past and been told they aren't doing anything illegal. grrrrrrrr........

I live in the boonies because I cherish my peace and quiet. I don't begrudge these folks being able or wanting to party. I JUST DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO LISTEN TO IT!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, part of the midnight celebration will entail shooting guns into the air. Only problem with that in my opinion is that the bullets have to come back down somewhere. All my animals will either be locked in the house or barn come sundown to prevent them from being shot. Was told by law enforecment that this is not illegal either.

Here's a link about the bullet concern.....

http://blog.chron.com/sciguy/2006/12...-into-the-air/

As for the noise thing?...I'm an old city boy from way back turned country. I'm used to taking a shower and asking the neighbor to pass the soap!

Sparrowtail, last New Year's Eve a young boy in our area was struck in the head by a bullet. It's assumed it was one shot in the air. He has lasting brain damage. I've been in my pasture and had bullets hit the ground around me. Thanks for the article confirming shooting in the air is dangerous. As for asking the neighbors to pass the soap, that's one reason I don't live in the city.

Katya, I try to live and let live. I have no interest in pranking the neighbors. I just don't want to have to listen to their music all day and hal the night. It's after 6:30PM here and they are still at it.

((((Liz)))) I hear you. It can be super annoying. I live down by the beach and the neighbors drive me nuts during festive holidays. And the surrounding communities, even dumber, including shooting into the air glad you and the furry, fuzzy family members are staying inside.

If it is any consolation...considering their behavior, the dummies most likely will have HUGE hangovers come tomorrow morning

i used to have people that lived next door to me that would play loud music at 2 in the morning.

so all you could here as you're trying to relax is boom boom boom boom boom

they used to shout a lot as well- and were pretty noisy decorators

but they've been gone for some time now... yay!

Well?.....everybody OK?

when I lived the city, I would have to wait until it rains to patch holes in the roof from falling objects (bullets).....knuckleheads....

there are laws against firing weapons in the air, in some states.

personally?....way,way,way to dangerous for me.........

nice and quiet 'round chere....was last night tooooo......hehe

Yep, everyone here at the farm is OK. I don't know about any accidental shootings because I haven't had the news on yet. Am enjoying the peace and quiet today.

Noisy neighbors cut the noise around 10:30 last night. Then started up again around 12:30. My guess is they went somewhere to watch fireworks, then came home and continued the party. It's REAL quiet in their directiong today. I suspect Rose is right and they are suffering almighty hangovers.

The cats all came and joined me in bed when the firecrackers, music and guns started up again at 12:30. I don't know if they were looking for protection or wanted me to do something to make the noise stop.

a story about calling the police because neighbors were shooting guns....

Neighbors a couple of places over were sitting on their back porch drinking and shooting guns (great combination, huh?). Hubby and I were out in the pasture trying to tend a sick horse. I could hear the bullets hitting the ground around me. We got the sick horse in the barn and I went in the house to call 911. The 911 operator asked if I'd gone over and asked the peole to stop shooting!?!?!? Ok, let's think about this - drunk yahoos with guns and I'm supposed to go over and ask them to stop?!?!?! I asked that they send an officer out to speak to the people. Officer came and talked to us. We told him about bullets hitting the ground us on OUR PROPERTY. Then he went and talked to the neighbors. Heaven knows what the neighbors said, he was short tempered with us when he came back. In a none too pleasant way he told us they had the right to shoot guns on their own property. I so wanted to ask if the bullets knew where the property line was, but figured he was already ticked at us for some reason. I figured I wouldn't push it. I respect what the police do, but this guy was sure boneheaded that day.

I'm glad everyone is okay. I live in the city and always have and I totally understand your complaint. i feel like your right to party ends where it keeps me from thinking/sleeping. Does your municipality have a noise ordinance? Some places also have laws about where you can fire guns (ie within a certain distance of residences.)

If I was a cat, I would curl up with a human when things got scary too! My friend has to close one of her cats in a room when there are fireworks because otherwise the cat will try to escape anytime the door is opened (and this not an outdoor cat).

Yes, I was just drifting off to sleep last night about 11:45 when I got half an hour of sonic booms/fireworks (one sounding like it was coming from my living room under me :-) that thoroughly woke me. My husband then came up to bed and we both were tossing and turning until I finally got up, thoroughly awake and uncomfortable again, and went downstairs until around 5:00-5:30 a.m. at which time I went "back" to bed until getting up at 9:00. Three hours sleep just isn't cutting it today.

I'm very glad I'm not sick or elderly/have an infant/young child, etc.; people just don't think to be considerate. Fireworks are illegal in my county and I could see ignoring it if it's the 4th of July and 9:00 p.m. but who needs that kind of noise at Midnight, for that long. Good thing this particular kind of partying is only once a year.

I saw on the news today that a woman on the beach was hit by a falling bullet. Police say it could have been fired from as far off as a mile. She's "lucky" that it hit her wrist and she was not seriously injured. The really scary thing is that she was standing on a populous beach. That means some yahoo was shooting a gun in a populous area.

Oh, believe or not Lizard, I DO SYMPATHIZE even though I live in the big city! Cause it's always noisy, and I'd think people (including your F******* neighbors) live in the country cause they like/want quiet. They want to get away from the hustle, bustle, and noise---not create it!

I won't go into detail, cause it will get my blood pressure up, but I used to live next door to people like that. Except EVERY weekend was New Year's Eve, and they had people over almost every day. Complained to everyone that needed to hear it, including these **********. Management did nothing. They had a few parties that started at 10pm and went on till 3am---OUTSIDE on the patio. Sound echoed everywhere, and I was up all night. They've long since moved, but I suffered for 3 1/2 years. I used to have these other neighbors who had parties every week. People often stayed over night, and I'd hear snoring---which kept me up. Even with earplugs, I could hear it.

Also used to have rowdy guys living across the way in the next building, who would yell at the TV when watching football. As if the players could hear them, and if they could---not that they would listen to the idiots. They are gone too.

I sleep with earplugs nightly. I wear headphones when I watch TV, unless it's something like the news. I have several white noise/sound machines, and these help muffle some noises. Stuff like leaf blowers (which aren't just noisy but just blow the dust onto my car), garbage trucks, people slamming doors, women walking in their stupid high heels (I hope they have foot problems later), cars revving up the engines, etc. All that noise, every day. Only quiet at 3am or something now.

I also hope your neighbors felt like **** the next day, like the **** they are. I hate noisy people, and I can't bang my head enough to express how strongly I feel about it. If you want to be noisy, fine. But people have the right to be, or to want quiet as well.

Wish we could ship all noisy people out to Jupiter. It's a big enough planet to accomodate them all. Let them all drive each other nuts. Maybe some other species will get fed up and EAT THEM!!

Owl, the quiet is one of the many reasons I live out in the boonies. I used to live in the city. Heck, I grew up in the suburbs around Detroit and Chicago. The non-stop nosie of the city made me nuts. I never got used to it.

I like my music loud some times too. I'll turn my radio up loud enough to make my ears bleed when it's a good tune. But I don't force it on other people.

I understand the tradition of making loud noise at midnight on New Year's as a way to ward off the bad spirits for the new year. I might not like the noise, but I understand it and can prepare for it. But loud music all day and half the night was a bit much!

My heart goes out to you having to live surrounded by the noise of the city.

As for your former neighbors who yelled at the TV when they watched football. I think that's a sports thing. My mom used to yell at the TV when she watched football and baseball. It was funny to hear my otherwise nice, polite mother making comments about the ump's ancestory when she watched games.

Purchase a good set of shooting ear plugs, you'll hear nothing and sleep well.

I wish.....Actually, there's some things I want/should hear, such as alarms. Not just in my unit, but the building itself has them too.

Even if the yelling at the TV is "sports thing", it's still (IMO) unnecessary, thoughtless noise. They can scream until they are hoarse; I just don't need to hear it. Doesn't change the outcome of the game anyway. I'm glad football season is nearly over. People aren't even close to being that rowdy over other sports. How would they like it if I did that, while they are trying to sleep, study, work, or just get some peace??? They wouldn't, I'm sure, but it seems okay for them to do it.

Lizard, I turn my tunes up too, but I assure you no one but me can hear them. There are some some songs I HAVE to crank up the volume for, like "Hocus Pocus"--by Focus. Love the yodeling-like sounds in it too. One of the best instrumentals EVER, I think!!!
