More with a twist (how they actually came about)

.....When pigs fly
Comes from the Cinncinati River when the pig farms were on one side of the river and the slaughterhouse was on the other. They would put the pigs on a barge early in the morning when the fog was thick, where it looked as though the pigs were floating or flying across the river.

It's raining cats and dogs.
It's from the Middle Ages when the peasants houses were often made of thatch and the dogs and cats would sleep on the roof or in the rafters. During a hard rain storm, they'd fall through!

Used to teach these in class....most of the ones come from somewhere if you just look. These are the only two that come to mind at the moment.

Now thats pretty interesting info there
I go to the Flying pig marathon every year in Northern KY/Cinci area and its a great benefit and good turnout, there are pigs on every corner that companies, schools and individuals and groups have sculptured for the cause & auction off. all monies go to the marathon cause!

I don't know if i can use the word here but it supposedly came from people in biblical times to say shh-it as they called the lepers it to avoid them caching the desease, i learned that version of it in college
