i need someone to translate some Hebrew for me to make sure that i'm using the right characters. i used an online translator (Babylon.com and others) but i want to make sure it's correct because it's going to be my first tattoo and i don't want an incorrect translation stuck on me for the rest of my life, haha.

if interested, please PM me?

Thank you!

Hope you're getting some help! If not, is there a synagogue near by where maybe a rabbi can help you?

I just don't think there's anyone here who can read it. That's my guess, anyway. I understand it is a tough language to learn. And it even reads from right to left!

I spent the last four hours studying the language and am ready to answer your questions.
Thanks for this!

Shalom = Peace.

I was going to say what about using Google Translator?

Now in Hebrew.

מה לגבי שימוש במתורגמן של גוגל? This is the same question I posted above.

Translation web sites are a good start, but it is more like a poor rough draft. You will tend to get overly literal word-for-word translations that miss the meaning entirely.

Anyway, can you post the text you want translated in this thread? It might lead to someone having a better idea of whom to ask in any case.

A dictionary isn't much better for a list of words like this. A person - with years of experience - can pick out words to better match what you are looking for. The dictionary might give you words that are correct but no longer have the right meaning, or a different meaning than you intended. It takes experience and trial and error for a person learning a language.

Any seminaries near by? Some pastors-in-training might take Hebrew as part of their training, and some seminaries might have a Hebrew professor on staff. Or even call some mainline churches (maybe a few United Methodist churches or Presbyterian or Lutheran), who might have seminary-trained ministers to see if any of them can read/translate Hebrew. A few seminaries require it or at least have it in their list of possible courses. (Obviously, just spilling out ideas off the top of my head....)

"Shalom" is just one of several Hebrew words I know off the top of my head! At least it means something good!

Hang in here, Dream Addiction! : ) I like your word choices!

i don't live in an area with a strong Jewish community, and i don't know of any local colleges that teach Hebrew i've asked around already, can't find anyone fluent in it.

and thanks, the words are from the serenity prayer: "grant me the serenity to accept the things i cannot change, the courage to change the things i can, and the wisdom to know the difference." i grew up with a portrait of it above my bed and it's a prayer that has helped me out a lot lately. well, i consider it a nice mantra, not necessarily a prayer, but anyway...

Have you considered having these words tatooed in another language, such as Greek?

yes, but then it wouldn't have as much personal meaning. it's a last resort, though.
