Yesterday one of my 6th graders and I were talking about her country report, Brazil. I mentioned that Mardis Gras was a very popular celebration in Brazil and she said "Yeah, if I remember I'll look it up". After a look from one of my coworkers, I suddenly realized "Oh dear god why!?"

So I woke up feeling very stupid and hope I don't end up getting in trouble.

I don't understand why mentioning the Mardi Gras would be a bad thing, It's a wonderful event.am I naive?

Well, I'm worried she's going to type in google images and get pictures of topless women. But my first thoughts were also that it is a wonderful celebration in Brazil, in the US, it's more about getting drunk and topless.

Don't you just hate when you wake up feeling stupid?

Yes, but it wears off soon enough! Queen of Awkward, at your service my lady. This will pass and it will be someone else's turn to insert foot into mouth. IF you stick around, you might just be able to glance at the torch being passed in another's direction, maybe me?! It was an accident, you meant no harm.

Hopefully she'll find the Brazilian version of Mardi Gras.

Dr. Skipper, I feel that way all too often. You are in good company. Like the shift I mistakenly wore the hat that said P*ssed off employee of the month instead of my uniform hat. Or the time I was reading out loud in biology class and I said micro-orgasm instead of micro-organism.

Yeah I do hate that
Carnival is very big in Brazil. It's important culturally. What's wrong with mentioning it?
By the way Carnival is just as crazy in Brazil if not more so. Even the kids dress up... or down. Brazil gets really wild.

Another thing...odds are, the computer she'd be using would have filters on it, since she's a kid. I think Google automatically edits your results until you set it to do otherwise. Her parents might have their own filtering system, so she might not see anything her parents wouldn't want her to.

Besides...not all cultures consider the human body as publicly offensive. Cultural beliefs in various parts of the world do not see the human body as something to be bashful about. Sometimes it is a good thing to differentiate this to children. Nudity is not always considered sexually deviant.
