It was disturbing to me to see how much of the food in the US was fast, junk and processed.
Anyone else notice the difference in amount of food between some of the countires? I was really struck by how little food the family from Chad had. |

God, the amount of food available for those in Mali and Chad made me quite sad.

What strikes me is how much processed food was in most of the 'developed' countries. Makes me kind of nervous.
This is really cool. Thanks for sharing.

I am so glad that i am not a typical Brit, my body would never cope with all that sugary and processed food. I much prefer proper meat and veg

Wow, that's an eye opener. I'd love to eat like the Mexicans and Central Americans. The Turks and Italians food looks healthy too.
The people in Chad and Mali look very healthy despite the small amount of food. The Germans seem to drink a lot of food ![]() |

Is that the start of a bad joke? :-)
I hate when they do "average" stuff for the US since there are 50 states and what people eat is so very different depending on their ethnic background, economic situation, etc. The Hawaiians eat a lot of Spam, for example, and in Nashville, Tennessee I just learned their fried chicken is "hot" fried chicken. I was born in the south and haven't eaten a collard green in my life (the bad joke about the Northerner asking if he wanted grits and he answered, "Sure, I'll try one") but watching TV you'd think that's the only green vegetable the south knows (besides corn bread, that is a vegetable isn't it?). What's with all the fake fruit drink in the USA picture? I have pizza maybe once a month and it's fresh-made, veggie topped, not delivery. Australia looked closer to what I eat but way too much ground beef? My husband cooks eggs for breakfast every day though, drinks milk instead of water though (I drink the water).

I was curious about the source too. I don't really doubt the "average" of Americans though. I've seen it in action. There's a reason they used the term average. You Perna, are one of the exceptions I think
![]() Collard greens don't taste very good but they are very nutritious. I'm not sure if grits are nutritious but they do go well with fried eggs and red gravy ![]() A lot of people have probably heard the song Poke Salad Annie. Poke salad is toxic unless prepared properly. It was a staple in central Texas at one time among poor blacks and whites. I've eaten it a few times... I never got sick from it and don't know anyone who did but it is not something that would ever be a regular part of my diet. Washing lettuce for salad is enough of a PITA to me ![]() |

Disappointed South Africa wasn't included. There would have been lots of venison!

These pictures are from a book with a similar title. One of my friends bought it for me several years ago and I loved it. The book has text that discusses each country's traditional foods and explains why they buy what they buy. It also states the size of the family, the average income and how much of the income goes to food. it was very interesting.
