Hi all,
Well, I moved into this new little house and have existing low pile carpet that I don't like in most of the house. It is beigh and servicable and so I don't plan to replace it for now. My existing vaccuum cleaner, an Oreck XL, won't pick up even cat hair or fuzz from the carpet. Can anyone here recommend a good cheap vaccuum cleaner?

How old is your Oreck? Did you check to make sure that the bag doesn't need to be emptied and that it's not clogged?

Yeah, I change the bag regularly...It doesn't have a height adjustment (that I could find!), and so doesn't make good contact with the low carpet.

Sears, Kenmore (sp), canister vacuum. I just got one for 35.00.... I love it. The suction is so hard, it actually pulls the carpet up from the floor. I have two cats and can see the air in the catch when I clean it out.

Don't get the bagless vacs. You don't have to change the bag but you do have to change the filter and they are a lot more expensive then the bags.
More expensive does not mean better.
A $70 Hoover upright works great.

My canister is bagless but it comes with a little brush the clips on to the side of the filter to brush it out. I'm not sure what the recommended replacement is but so far, I just brush the excess dusty dirt out with the little brush/pick. After having a canister, I'll never own an upright again. The canister moves easier, though sometimes it seems to take longer to cover the same amount of space but my canister is a small one. Some canisters have a big brush base but I was shopping price that day. . .

Patty,

I have a Bissell Bagless 6579. It works great one indoor/outdoor carpet, which is what's in this apt. It's bagless and has a filter. If you watch, you can get it on sale for about $50 at Walmart.

Hugs,

Jan
