What's the best way to get actors for a short film? What's the best place to find them?

do you live near some sort of amateur theatre or something like that? I'm sure stage people could work in front of a camera too, maybe?

Yeah, I'm just bad at communicating. Would you contact the theater looking for actors or contact the actors personally?

Maybe a school would be a good place to try, too. I don't know if High School or college would be the right age or what's near you. Anyone who is already doing shows probably has people in charge of contacting their actors, who could let you know if there are people who are available and how close they are to what you are looking to cast. Probably better to contact the people in charge instead of going behind their back on this.

I'd recommend putting up flyers at community colleges nearby, saying that you're looking for actors in a short film & contact you via phone, e-mail, or whatever. It would help if you were to give a brief description of the type/s of actor/s that you're looking for as well.

Depending on where you live, there are a number of ways. In the past I've gone on a website for actors looking for work and looked for specific physical traits; at the time we were looking for someone tall, bald, mid-thirties. Checking in with college or high school theatre departments is a good idea. You could call them directly, possibly go in and speak to people personally, put up flyers in the schools.
