OMGosh!!!!! I live in the county, near farm land and such. BUT....in a subdivision with lots that are about .5-1 acre OK. The new neighbors have got a pet chicken!!!! AHHHH!
It's not in a coop or whatever....it just runs around everywhere. And the dang thing won't SHUT UP!!!!! It's not a rooster but it still crows and makes all sorts of noise. It starts at the BUTT-CRACK OF DAWN and goes at it all.....dayy....long!!!!! It is driving me crazy!!!! bok-bok-bok err-a-err-a-errrrrrr!!!!! i love animals, but this chicken's future....well, i can dream of a day when one of the neighborhood cats or dogs decides they wanna "play" with the new chick on the block.... |

I know how you feel....... as my neighbor has many many many chickens and a darn rooster that likes to crow at 3 am - and they have pigs they are breeding to sale to FFA students for the fair and I hate it when the wind shifts my way - Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!
But I love the sheep's they have...... and getting to see the new babies - one was just born three days ago. |

The BUTT CRACK OF DAWN, eh?
 You can also dream of having chicken dinner one of these nights! IDK, Recluse, it could very well be a rooster if it's trying to crow. It's just too young to be feathered out and crow properly???

I have 2 roosters and 4 hens. they don't crow! hmmmmm wonder why? lol

I stand to be corrected. i got a better look and it is in fact a rooster. Not just "a rooster", but two roosters and a hen!!!!
The two males are evidently vyeing for her attention and that is what all their fussing is about. GEEZZZZZ LOIUZZZZZ!!!!! WHY ME, WHY ME, WHY MEE!!! i have enough trouble sleeping!!! recluse1

All the more reason to be planning that chicken dinner, Recluse!
 You need to try "going to bed with the chickens" so you can also be UP with them! OR... buy a pair of earplugs.

Silly Sweet!!!!! no Mr. Recluse can't puff his chest out that far!!!! and i don't cackle, but my snoring could attract a few big bears,lol!

But I've had chickens who's combs rivaled those of the rooster, yet they laid eggs and didn't crow!

I think with time you'll eventually tune the sound out. I used to live next too a farm when I first moved here to WV (long ago) and they had chickens, goats, cows...all those noise making farm animals and after a few months I no longer heard them. It's like living in the city and tuning out the traffic noise.

lol tomi. I actually got my chickens from a poultry farm. huge chicken houses. maybe 10k or more in there. these were raised to be fryers so they didn't walk around much in there. I saved them from the doom they were raised for hehe no eggs yet but maybe someday lol

Depending on the breed, you can tell roosters by their comb, but you can always tell them by their tail feathers. The males are also brighter and puffier than females.
I wish I had some suggestion to make the rooster shut up, but dinner sounds like the plan of choice. Actually, you might ask your neighbor if he wants to sell the rooster and give it to someone who lives far, far away. I also don't believe people are allowed to let their chickens roam all over the neighborhood. For one thing, they are very dirty creatures. I wish you the best on your delimma. If by chance you buy the rooster and need instructions on how to clean it for dinner, send me a pm and I'll tell you. (It's a bit graphic for a forum.) Ick. Jan

Do you have a neighborhood association. Often they have or can draft rules to protect from situations like Fuzzy Nuts 1 & 2. ;-)
