A friend of mine was showing me his new Kindle Fire yesterday. I think I want one. Anybody have any recommendations? I like all the additional features the Fire has over a plain e-reader. Am wondering if the Kindle is better than the Nook...
+++++ edited to add.... OK, I'm a bit of an idiot about this. I just realized the Kindle Fire and the Nook HD are tablets, not e-readers. What the heck is the difference? Any techy types want to help me out here? |

Tablets are heavier. They're designed for games and video rather than reading. The Kindle Fire has battery life of about five hours in my experience. I love my Kindle Fire but it weighs a ton so I can't read books on it. It's like a cheaper iPad basically.
An e-reader is like having a book that happens to be electronic. They have a different kind of display you can look at for much longer, are much lighter and the Kindle ones have a battery that goes for weeks or even months. |

We have several Kindle Fires in our house. We love them. We are big readers around here, so they are primarily used for that purpose. I don't find them heavy. You can also access the internet, watch movies, listen to music, use apps for games, calendars, contacts, etc.
My mom and sister use Nook and like them equally. I don't think there is much difference in the brands as far as capability. I got an iPad through work this year though, so I passed my Kindle on to my husband and I use my iPad for my reading (still can access my Kindle books using the Kindle app which works well for me.). Now that I have an iPad, I much prefer using it. It has quite a bit more capabilty than the Fire, is easier to use for internet, etc. The iPad, by the way, is heavier than the Kindle. |

Wow, you don't find the Fire heavy? I can't imagine lugging that around in my handbag or holding it up reading in bed.
I have a Kindle Paperwhite for reading and love it. If you mainly want to read books I would consider an e-reader because they are so light and the battery life is so good. |
