As the festive season draws near and the thoughts of what to buy for family and friends there always seems to be one fly in the ointment.... or maybe several. I dont have a whole lot of money so I try and get things that people would like or find useful. I used to buy him calendars but now he buys his own. Anything I suggest he says ............. boring.

My brother is very hard to buy for. Years ago when he wasnt working he bought no-one presents. Not even a 50 cent mug from an OP shop. He is very specific in the things he likes. He likes expensive things. Things that have well known labels/brands. Now he has a job he has to make sure that what he buys others makes a statement, and also makes others jealous. To put it mildly he is a snob.

Last year I bought him a computer mouse for him that was in the shape of a sports car. I thought it was cute. Yesterday I was in his computer room and I couldn't see it anywhere. Not even decoration.

So what to I do? Get him something useless or get him nothing? Wish I could change his attitude.

I know what you mean. I've gotten to the point where I ask people to make me a list of what they might want for Christmas, and depending on the price, I get one or more of the items.

I have given gifts in the past that folks have sold almost immediately at yard sales or otherwise shown their lack of excitement about them.

@Payne, I hate when that happens! that's just mean.

@Possum, since it doesn't seem possible to make him happy, could you make a donation in his name to a cause that he has? or something along those lines?
Thanks for this!

Responses appreciated Payne and Marla

For some people now it seems that the thought doesn't count any more. I asked him what he might like but he said it was too early, translation, he couldn't be bothered. I would be very sad if somebody sold my gift. That's sad and hurtful Payne.

I did think of going down the voucher for other causes Marla but the only cause my brother has is himself. Thanks for trying though.

The most special presents I had last year were hand made. Another year I received a voucher for a mosquito net for a family in Africa and I felt good about it. I just don't understand my brother.

I know, I would be honored to get that kind of a gift! In any case I know it's hard but please don't let it bother you too much, try to concentrate on the people who appreciate you and your thoughtfulness, that's what it's all about!

Yes, it is time to turn the page over on this. At least for a month. Thanks for your kind words of support Marla.
