Who is the most dominant sportsman you can think of?
Wayne Gretzky? Roger Federer? Ty Cobb? Meet Leigh Matthews. The only MIDFIELDER to be in the top 10 for goals kicked in the AFL (Australian Football League), a stat dominated by permanent FORWARDS. In fact it is expected that by the time the stats are fully compiled on Matthews, he will be in the top 10 for both midfield stats (passes) and forward stats (goals). To give a further example of how dominant he was, Matthews averaged 2.8 goals as a midfielder. The next best is 1.9, by Kevin Bartlett, who is considered one of the great players of all time. The fact that Matthews is so far ahead of him further illustrates his dominance over his peers. He was incredibly tough. In this video he runs into one of the goal posts, snapping it in half ![]() Matthews was also ruthless on the football field. Quoted as saying probably the only thing he wouldn't have done to win a game was kill his opponent. Was deregistered by the AFL and charged with assault in 1985 for breaking an opponent's jaw, but that has only added to his legend. |
