cupboard
I think this is a regional thing... okay, I'm a geek. I googled the difference According to geek.com a cupboard has shelves and a cabinet does not. According to a linguistic site in the UK cupboard would be what we call a closet in the US. Is everyone completely confused yet? ![]() |

To us, on the east coast of Canada, the cupboards are the shelves where we place food and dishes. A cabinet is a single shelf section in the bathroom like a medicine cabinet. A hutch is a cabinet system with cupboards on the bottom and open shelves on top for dish displays, but it is an independent, movable piece of furniture. So, I guess, to our cultural group, cupboards are multiple and connected, whereas cabinets are more individual or free moving.

I heard both growing up, so I use them both...mom was from Colorado and dad was from Arkansas...I don't remember which side of the family used which though.

I say cabinet for one thing, and cupboard for another. A cabinet is a smaller storage, a cupboard is larger. My whole family does this, I think it's common where I'm from, too.

Cabinet unfortunately. The Internet has totally ruined my Queens English. I'm glad my English teachers cannot see me now...
Some of it is pure immersion, other times I just had to change, since Americans often don't know words in British English.

I use cabinet ..... but when explaining where a particular item is in my kitchen to a visitor, I do not say "the cabinet door next to the fridge" I say, "the door next to the fridge"... so I don't actually use the word very often.

I use cupboard all the time for the storage spaces in the kitchen. I think I might use cabinet for a storage space that is fancier, more for display.

According to my handy dandy Chrome extension pop-up Dictionary:
cupboard A cabinet or closet, usually with a door and shelves, used for storage cabinet A cupboard with drawers or shelves for storing or displaying articles I use both depending which ever word pops into my head first... Although, in my doddering old age I sometimes call them... uh... I call them... crap... it's right on the tip of my tongue... gimee a minute and I'll remember... if I can just remember what it was that I was supposed to be remembering... Dan |

I would say a cupboard is more like a bedroom wardrobe with solid doors and inside an assortment of compartments but can be anywhere in the house and built in or freestanding. A cabinet may have drawers at the bottom but most of the upper part would be glass doors so you can display/ see whats in it. Drinks cabinet, glasses cabinet, china cabinet, trophy cabinet. Im from UK though so not sure if its same US

The kitchen are the cupboards; everything else is a cabinet, if it has doors (with shelves or not); except if it is where clothes are stored and those are closets/wardrobes (robes), or armoires (all with shelves or not).

I'm from England and I think just about every storage unit is a cupboard to me
![]() If it's in the kitchen, it's a cupboard. If it's anywhere with a door and we store things in it, it's a cupboard. Although, a wardrobe is a wardrobe ![]() I think I probably use the word cabinet occasionally - like if there's a fancy cupboard with glass doors and it's huge!
