As you guys may have read, I started a blog and was thinking of doing some youtube videos. Well I did. I was wondering if you guys could watch it and give me some feedback? It's about my journey with mental illness and I'd like to use this channel as a platform to help end stigma.
Umm yes, I know I smack my lips a lot in the beginning, it's a nervous habit. Bare with me, I will get better at this!
Did you find this video helpful?
Did this video resonate with you as someone with mental illness?
Would you want to see more videos by me if I get my lip smacking under control?
Thanks guys. my channel

I love your style! your nail polish colour is awesome What an great first video, you seem very comfortable, which makes me feel comfortable when I watch it.
I love the fact that you see the positive side of BPD, such as your sensitivity and intuitive nature.

Great video!

This is great, keep posting videos.

I could relate to a lot of what you said even though I'm bipolar.
Thanks for this!

I don't understand spoken english very well, but I watched it. You are very good in talking in video! It didn't seem that it was the first time. And it's great that you talk about your experience with everybody.
P.S. I love decorating my nails too!
Thanks for this!

Thanks both of you! Yeah, I have a bit of a new york accent I think. At least I've been told by others that I do.

Asking for feedback can be dangerous ;-)

Ok, I watched the first few minutes of your video. So you are shy and sensitive. Why do you think that's a BPD? I suspect that it will diminish as you develop more self confidence.

Some communication tips for future videos:

1. Organize your message and your thoughts. Don't ramble. It's tiring to listen to someone who rambles....that's why I only watched a few minutes. I'm not saying to read from a script....just think about your message and present it succinctly.

2. Definatly loose the lip smacking. It distracts from your message....as does the ink.

You are pretty, smart and articulate. You can do this thing and do it well if you want to.

Good luck to you, and let us know about future videos.

No, but in the video your blouse (or whatever) was pulled aside to reveal the tattoo. It just distracts from your pretty face.

Atomicc,
I enjoyed your video, and I think it's great for a first attempt. Even though I'm bipolar, I could empathize with you as a young adult with a mental illness (I'm 21 and in college). As you and one other person has identified, the lipsmacking, background noise (not much, just a little), and slight rambling (or that you pause at times) detract a little.

As someone who gets distracted easily and struggles with organization/structuring, it was hard for me to stay interested because I didn't know what to expect from the video. Sometimes I find a brief "summary" helpful at the start of the video, i.e. the subpoints that someone is going to talk about. "My journey with Borderline Personality Disorder" gives the viewer a sense of what the video is going to be about, but not a very concrete one.

In the future, it might also be helpful to stick to the heart of the material, instead of being slightly tangential and talking about how you didn't rehearse. I think you're very brave, articulate, and wonderful. Keep making videos, and keep us posted.

Love,
Allie (is your name actually Allie too?)
Thanks for this!

I don't mean to imply there was anything improper...there certainly was not. Just suggesting you don't distract from the message.

Hi guys! I just thought I'd let you know I made a new video and hopefully it's a little more rehearsed and not rambling.

I thought you did a wonderful job (lip-smacking and all)! I would definitely watch and follow you. It's not an easy thing to admit or want to talk about, especially publicly and not just to strangers, it's hard to admit to family and to ourselves. For years I self-medicated, refusing to believe that I needed help. I struggled for years and during a moment of clarity in all of my chaos, after all of my inner-battles and self-doubt, I had a moment of clarity and the light-bulb went off. The intense program that I was recommended to helped me a great deal, I think that sharing your story is both bold and courageous and I now, having accepted who I am, am much quicker at reaching my hand out if I see the signs or someone that exhibits something that reminds me of where I used to be. Kudos for being courageous enough to help others.

I liked both videos! I could relate to a lot of what you said, and it's nice to actually 'hear' someone speak about it....feels more personal than reading something.

Look forward to future video's!

I liked your honesty. You could see in your face you were being sincere. What I'd like to know is what experience if any do you have with passive aggressive personalities. I'm living with this and could use your suggestions.

Thanks!

I thought you were exceptionally comfortable in front of the camera, which is certainly a bonus The video did resonate with me, however, some of the descriptions used about borderline personality disorder overlap with so many other diagnoses (anxiety, needing approval from others, lacking a clear sense of self) that, perhaps later videos/posting could clarify.(Especially since you are in the psych field)

Also, some folks who might watch the videos won't automatically know what "DSM" is the acronym for, so spelling that out the way you did with DBT would be lovely.

Yay you! I love that you want to diminish the stigma of mental illness, and share your experiences. (And your tattoos rock!)

I agree with pretty much everything here mentioned for feedback. I almost quit watching because of the low-energy sound of depression and feeling sorry for the self. I didn't want to stop the video so that my critique could be based on having seen the entire thing. Also, compliment here: I love the fact that you pressed on through the discouragement AND you taught me there are variations of the diagnosis -- something I had not known before. I'm much older, so I've dealt with my illnesses longer and now have physical health issues adding to the depression. Mostly, I try coping skills that over the years have served me well. Taking something I love and doing it until my mood improves or just until I'm so tired (working in my yard) that the day has passed and it's time to nestle in for the night.

So thanks for being brave and making a video. I think it will help some younger people, and if it helps you talk it out that way -- added bonus.
