And all of the idiotic things that are said.
I started crying with laughter yesterday in English class. We're learning about subcultures, cultural relativism, optimism, etc. and we got a worksheet to fill out. In a section where we identified a statement as either CR or ethnocentrism, there was one about genital mutilation. It talked a little about how some cultures see it as okay but others view it as barbaric.
A kid in the class, let's call him Bob, couldn't wrap his head around it.
He didn't know how it was done (the cultures remove the clitoral hood, so it's basically a bundle of nerves - in case you didn't know either). After receiving no response from the teacher, he went on to say, "Does it grow back?"
I started laughing. It gets better.
After that, he says, "It's kind of hard to have sex with a mutilated vagina." To top it off, I heard him mutter, "Do they put it back after marriage or what?" I was DYING of laughter. Not literally, figuratively, although with my coughing and inability to breathe you would think literally.
God, school is so interesting once in a while.

Yup, it's being mentioned a lot now. I think it was my Sociology class that discussed it, as well. Was touched upon in the chapter about cultures. (Subcultures, culture relativism, etc) I didn't know they covered it in English sometimes.

School can be really interesting sometimes.

Here in the UK we are making our first prosecution for FGM right now, 2 doctors in London. About time too.

Ghoulish monsters quite frankly.

Get this...I saw a documentary today on a cosmetic procedure girls and women are paying for now to have their labia cut and carved to make IT "prettier" and "younger" looking for those "moments." This is actually being ASKED for and PAID for now, as if the implants and tummy tucks aren't enough.

Yes, it's called a labiaplasty. And it is ridiculous.

God, school is so interesting once in a while.

It's a form of female castration and im not sure i understand why you think this young man's response was funny. They remove the "hood" so the woman gets no pleasure. it's sadistic and illegal in most countries even though many still practice it.
Never laugh at someone elses inquiries. One day, you will have a question and will most likely never ask it for fear of people laughing at you.
Hope you reconsider and
shame on you
P.S. how many mutilated vaginas have you seen?
Thanks for this!

I know what it is and I also happen to think it's horrible. I thought it was funny not because he was ignorant but rather the way he responded. He never once inquired with something like, "How is it performed?" He asked and said those other things. He was being kind of...rude about it, I guess. I just thought what he said was funny.
And I always fear people laughing at me. There are many questions I haven't asked because of it.
I've thought about it since then...my opinion really hasn't changed. I mean, I figure not everyone knows what people go through, but instead of going up to the teacher after class or in private and asking her how it's done, he instead said those things. I understand some students may not want to ask a teacher about things involving genitals, but he brought it up in front of the whole class, so I would assume he would be okay the other way around. He didn't even make an effort to find out.

I'd have lost it at the "does it grow back?" question if he was being serious... because what a question to ask. "Bob" must have skipped biology class

I noticed Nicks_Nose and DrSkipper were talking about that procedure, and while it's certainly not the same thing, there are guys who get circumcised as adults for cosmetic purposes too. It's a shame that our society judges people to such a degree that someone would be made to feel like they need to alter their reproductive organ's appearance. That's about as private as you can get.

There was a movie about this back in 2004, no theaters here showed it, it wasn't available to rent anywhere. I put in a request at Netflex and they did get it a few months later. It is a highly rated beautiful movie about a tough subject. Maybe you should find it and ask the teacher to show it in class to raise awareness of the oblivious moron in your class.

I would have been on the floor with laughter too, what a moron. He might have thought he was being a wiseass but all he did was show his ignorance.

I know a friend/neighbor/man - children's doctor - who had tribal carvings all over his face. He is a tiger and it looks nice on him. I never asked him how or why he had these... school bus stop with my daughter.. However, I do not approve any of this especially on children ... At least adults are old enough to realize what they want.. I hope.
