Okay, well I have this dream for a really long time. I'd like to be an alternative model. I've got tattoos and piercings and weird hair so I think it's perfect for me. I'm short too so I'd like to do like model for t-shirt websites and such. Nothing at all fancy, just for a little extra money. I can look into sites and such, but my parents say I'm being stupid and I'll just be taken for a ride or kidnapped into white slavery. Obviously they don't think I can do it.

Can I have your honest opinion? I have photos in an album on my profile. I'm not skinny but I have pretty good curves. Do I have a shot or should I give up right now? It's not a career, just for fun til my masters program starts.

I am not sure that you are very alternative? You are very pretty and have lovely skin.

I am not completely sure what alternative modelling is exactly but I am guessing they are people that are very far from the norm?

I'd say to play up your beautiful eyes as they are intriguing. You have some nice model-like expressions. Just wondering, where are your teeth? Or is that not part of the modeling scene? I don't know what alternative modeling is either. I'm not into pink hair so can't comment on that. Your parents have every reason to be concerned about your safety and, if you pursue this, you should be VERY cautious. Contact only legitimate businesses and have a friend with you or waiting outside as back-up. JMO

I voted 'maybe' because you are gorgeous but it depends a lot on what kind of look the agency is looking for. You will need lots of pictures with variety of looks. If an agency declines you ask them what would make you a better candidate.

Good luck!

I would be considered alternative because I have five piercings and nine tattoos. I couldn't be a regular model because they'd have to photoshop all that stuff out.

Thank you all for your answers! I will be very careful and I plan to take actual photos in a variety of clothing styles. I just don't have any right now that aren't web cam photos hah

Guess I would think there were safer & maybe better ways of earning money while waiting to get into grad school.....playing around in areas like that leaves you wide open for some not nice situations....why take chances when you can find other means of income that are safer?

I think you totally could be an alternative model, your beautiful. Your eyes & hair are great for modeling. I like the different emotions & poses shown in each picture. Good Luck!

What do you mean? I said it's been a dream of mine, not just to make money.

I googled alternative models, some of them are quite out there

Like I said, you are good looking enough and have great skin and your look is quite versatile (judging by your photos) so I would say you had a good chance.

When you get your professional photos done for your portfolio, I would love to see them xxx

Good luck to you xxx

I think that being an alt model would be amazing! In all honesty, I think you'd have to have a much more extreme look than you do in the pics. The difficulty, of course, is that you're really young to go the alt route unless you are a very stable, strong person and can handle rejection, fierce competition, a lifestyle that will put you right in the face of some serious risks (drugs, fetishism, etc.)...I mean, if you create yourself into extreme alt it's not like you can switch back and work in a law office or something. Another serious consideration is geographic location...I see you're in NY, a definite advantage, but take into consideration all the other stuff I've mentioned. If you live with BPD, in opting for alt be careful you aren't also opting for self-destructive behavior. I'm very alternative in appearance, but I'm not young (past "real" job stuff, for example) and I also live in California. Alt is the norm.

One more thought...alt is expensive. That's the irony of it. Maintaining an alternative appearance costs a bundle...frankly put, it's image management. So you have to have a nice source of income in order to pull it off & get your image rolling before you can even be considered an alt model.

Is modelling really so dangerous?

I can see you on the cover of a music magazine.

She had to pay her own plane fare and hotel and food and sometimes she didn't get paid for the modeling sessions. She came back to the USA with a $2000 credit card debt.

I think despite your colorful hair and piercing and tattoos you have kinda "classic" look.... your face looks "normal" (in a good way... you could probably model some conservative clothes (can't piercings just be taken out for the shoot). You have nice symmetric features.

Sure you could totally pull the alternative look too. Depends what you wanna do with it. What would you be modelling as "alternative"? Clubs, music stores, clothes?

Maybe you could try being a hair model too, since you are not afraid to do stuff with your hair and you could get some crazy styling for free

I think you're mistaking what kind of model I want to be. I'd like to model clothing...for local brands. I don't think I'd be flying to China. Not to mention I'm twenty three years old.
PLEASE be honest!
Clothing model, but for sites like hot topic that don't mind if I have tattoos. Maybe alternative wasn't the right word. I want to be a model for local clothing companies that have an alternative costumer base. Clearer? haha

I've thought about it in the past but I do not think I'd model nude now. Not with an amazing boyfriend of four years who I know would be uncomfortable with it.

Clothing definitely. I don't do "clubs" haha. I agree I could do some stuff to cover up my tattoos but I say alternative because I am not the typical body type for an actual model. I am only 5'3 and I am NOT thin, so I would have to work in just photos and for sites that don't really mind my weight.

Remember that you asked for everyone's complete honesty.

Yeah, when you said "alternative model" a very clear image comes to my mind. Now I'm not exactly sure what you mean...modeling clothing for local brands...if you or a friend has an etsy shop you could model for that...as for a corporation like Hot Topic, I'm fairly sure they want models who are the standard very tall and skinny.
Thanks for this!

I live in New York City so there are a lot of small clothing brands popping up needing people.
I have been nothing but kind about everyone's advice so I'm not sure what you're insinuating ? I was merely explaining I'm 23 not 13 so I don't think that story relates.

Whoa, now...I wasn't insinuating anything at all. If you're that sensitive to perceived criticism I'm wondering how you'd function in a field as intense as modeling? Just a thought.

I've known several models in various areas over the years, and all of them had contacts in the industry to begin with--or they had a lot of money and time to make connections. Modeling, a few years ago, was harder to get a job in than acting! And 1 equity actor in 4000 has an acting job on average (according to the IRS List).

Yes, you definitely could model if you're able to do whatever it takes. Still, unless you know someone who knows someone who knows a model, or have enough money to hire a professional model photographer (who not only takes the photos but shows them to the right agent), I doubt you'd be hired. It's not you. It's who you know--or can meet.

Evaluate your contacts and those of everyone you know. If you get a nibble, go for it!! I believe in dreams. Very best luck to you, (((((((atomicc)))))))!!

I agree and disagree with some of those points. Knowing someone might help in certain situations but having a look and a good portfolio is critical. Being seen by the right person opens doors.
OP... my answer is maybe. I'm not familiar with the term "alternative modeling." Can you get some gigs? Sure, if you have the look that someone wants. It's a lot like acting. Every role is not going to go to the classic lookers. Somebody has to play the average everyday people. Or in your case maybe the not so average people If you are 5'3 and not spectacularly gorgeous (actually just the height thing is the most important part) then you are going to have to find a niche to fill. I don't think you are going to get the type of gigs the girl in the pic you posted gets.
As mentioned above, if you don't have a thick skin then modelling may not be for you. Attend some auditions for commercials. There will be a line of gorgeous woman. All but one will be given various versions of "no."
If it's what you want then go for it. Best of luck.

"It's not you but who you know or who you meet."

Add to that if not careful it's what you are WILLING TO DO with who also that can force you into a situation you would rather not be in to earn a place. Sure not all are like that but sadly it's something women run into a lot especially in competitive fields.
